Friends, join us in celebrating our two (2) year #workiversary with Emily, NEW’s Board Trustee. "This month we honor and uplift Emily Heintz, a true ray of light and a cornerstone of our Mission Circle and Strategy & Impact Subcircle. From the moment Emily joined the Strategy & Impact group, she exemplified a deep understanding of our collective vision and, more importantly, what it takes to bring it to life. Emily’s stewardship of our inaugural Strategy Symposium was exactly the kind of support we needed—rallying participants, engaging fellow Circle members, and ensuring our mission resonated with everyone she reached out to. Her passion for our work is infectious, her magnetic personality lights up every room, and her unmatched ability to weave depth with humor makes even the hardest challenges seem surmountable. On a personal note, Emily’s mentorship, unwavering support, and genuine encouragement have been an invaluable source of strength and inspiration for me. She lifts as she climbs, leaving an undeniable mark on every interaction we have. For all this and so much more, we are endlessly grateful. Thank you, Emily, for championing our mission with heart and authenticity. Your impact is profound, and today, we celebrate you with deep appreciation and joy. Happy 2nd workiversary on our Mission Circle! -- Yodit" If you’ve had the pleasure of working with Emily over the past two (2) years, please reach out and send her a kind note. We’re so glad to have you on the #bestteamever, Emily!

Every day, the NEW team is hard at work alongside mission-driven leaders organizations across SE Michigan. But so much of our work happens outside the public eye, it’s hard to fully understand the impact of what we do. So we’re making a better effort at bringing the stories of our work to light. This is just one of many… For our friend Kallista Marie at Our Community Reads the vision of a future where Black children feel empowered and academically confident is worth striving towards. Since 2020, OCR has been creating safe spaces for Black children to be seen, valued, celebrated, and empowered. They host monthly spaces for girls (3rd through 8th grade) and boys (4th through 10th grade) that foster connection and provide mentorship. They offer workshops that create opportunities for self-awareness and create confidence. And they even provide opportunities for students to travel, letting them explore and discover their world in new ways. “Thank you so much Ms. K and your team for giving these girls this opportunity they will never forget. Love it. You rock.” - Queens Club Parent Since our time together, Kallista often reflects on the conversations she was part of. “They opened me up, challenged my perspective, and expanded my heart. It’s helped me be a more evolved person, a community member, a mom, all of the things.” “Kallista’s passion for literacy in particular with youth is contagious. She does a great job at connecting and collaborating with others in our Learning Communities. Even long after the programs have finished, she finds ways to still connect with other folks from other Learning Communities, such as Black Men Read. It was obvious that Kallista was not there to just learn for herself, but to nurture her sense of community and action, and other folks organizations. We feel so lucky to know Kallista and are honored to have her be a part of our community.” – Carly Friedrich In 2023-24, NEW brought another seventy-nine (79) of SE Michigan’s leaders through our learning communities. We're proud and grateful to work alongside Kallista and Our Community Reads in pursuit of our shared vision of a just and thriving society. “We are the ones we have been waiting for.” — June Jordan In the aftermath of the recent U.S. election, many of us --in the social sector especially-- are grappling with fear, anger, and uncertainty. Emotions that can spark action, but can just as easily leave us feeling stuck or overwhelmed. At Centering Justice, the podcast I host, we hold to one fundamental belief: we are who we need. Especially when it comes to caring for each other, our organizations and our communities. We also know that the pandemic and racial reckoning in recent years taught us alot that canz serve us now. On November 20, 2024, we’re creating a space to ground ourselves in this truth and explore what emerges when we are still and listening deeply. This episode is about facing hard truths together, but also about remembering the strength we find in each other. We will reflect on how communities have shown up in times of crisis—and how we can continue to do so now. Join us as we: ?? Take personal inventories of those we can count on. ?? Identify the offerings we can give and receive within our communities. ?? Name our needs and fortify ourselves for what lies ahead with collective care. This is not just a discussion. It’s a call to reconnect, to remember, and to act on what we know: that even when systems fail us, we will not fail each other. Be part of this communal dialogue. Together, we’ll transform fear into solidarity and silence into action. "Since 2020, I’ve had the privilege of writing a blog post around this time of year, sharing reflections on my role and work fundraising for NEW. And each year, I’ve taken time to reflect, found a central theme, and waxed poetic about my latest musings. And of course, it always contains an aligned call to action to donate and support NEW as we lovingly push the social sector to transform."
