?? #GMOs were once marketed as a solution to food insecurity. But decades later, we see the real picture: more corporate control, more chemical use, and higher risks for farmers and biodiversity. Now, the EU is making it easier for #NewGMOs to enter our food system—fewer safety checks ? , no clear labeling ? , and no real protections for farmers against contamination ? . While Europe is opening the door wider for agribusiness, other countries are taking a stand: ?? Kenya banned GMO imports. ?? The Philippines blocked the cultivation of GMO rice. ?? Mexico outlawed GMO corn to protect its cultural and agricultural heritage. Why? Because they've seen the damage! ?? GMOs, old and new, are only feeding corporate profits. The latest example? A newly modified banana that doesn’t improve nutrition or support farmers, but simply extends shelf life to reduce supermarket losses. ?? Why is the EU prioritizing deregulation and techno-fixes over real solutions? Socially, the government’s declaration of native, non-certified seeds as “illegal” was akin to a cultural death—an imposed severing of ancestral knowledge, traditions, and connection with the land that is integral to the indigenous way of life."

This is a big win for food and seed sovereignty at the federal level, setting a strong precedent that other countries can look to for guidance. A quick timeline of events leading up to this moment: ?? December 2020: President Andrés Manuel López Obrador issued a decree aiming to phase out the use of GM corn and glyphosate by 2024, expressing general concerns over health and environmental impacts. ???? March 2023: The US and Canada formally requested dispute settlement consultations under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), arguing that Mexico's measures lacked scientific basis and hindered trade. ?? December 20, 2024: A USMCA dispute resolution panel ruled that Mexico's restrictions on GM corn imports violated the USMCA, stating that the measures were not based on scientific evidence. ? December 21, 2024: Now-President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed confidence that the Mexican Congress would enact legislation to ban the planting of GM corn, emphasizing the need to protect biodiversity. ??
