It is with deep sorrow and respect that the Houston Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects (HNOMA) acknowledges the passing of Curtis "Curt" Moody, FAIA, a visionary leader, entrepreneur, and trailblazer in the field of architecture. In 1982, Curtis Moody co-founded Moody Nolan, a firm that would grow to become the largest African American-owned architectural firm in the United States. At a time when architects of color faced significant barriers in the profession, Curt’s entrepreneurial spirit and unwavering belief in the power of architecture to transform society set him apart and guided his remarkable 40-year career. Curt’s contributions to the architectural community are vast and inspiring. His tireless advocacy for educational and professional opportunities for architects of color has created pathways for countless individuals, including many of our members at NOMA nationally and across the varied chapters. His influence and dedication were recognized with numerous accolades, including the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Award in 1992, recognizing his outstanding contributions as an African American Architect, the elevation into AIA College of Fellows in 1997, Distinguished Service Award from Ohio State University in 2002, the AIA Ohio Gold Medal Award in 2007. Leading to an AIA Firm of the Year award, making Moody Nolan the first African American firm to receive this honor, and a beacon of hope for minority-owned businesses in the industry. Curt’s legacy extends beyond his professional accomplishments; his passion for uplifting others and his commitment to mentoring the next generation of architects have left an indelible mark. As we remember his life, we are reminded of his words: "The only thing standing between what you want, and what you are going after, is you." These words continue to inspire all of us at HNOMA as we carry forward his mission. We extend our deepest condolences to the Moody family, his colleagues at Moody Nolan, and all who were touched by his work and generosity. Curtis Moody’s legacy will live on through the many lives he impacted and the groundbreaking work he achieved. May his memory be a blessing. ??

My involvement with Project Pipeline began in 2019, and it continues to be one of the most rewarding parts of my journey in the profession. Hosted annually by HNOMA, Project Pipeline empowers young people to create change in their community through design, using the city as their classroom and connecting with real-world architects and planners. It’s an honor to continue this journey with fantastic colleagues, helping build a brighter future through the power of design. To learn more about it: https://lnkd.in/gngr4Njk
