Why two? Because we get twice the technology! The #USELTP combines two sophisticated methods of making extremely large segmented-mirror telescopes with state-of-the-art adaptive optics systems and a diverse suite of scientific instruments. This technology development will continue US leadership in astronomy technology innovation and provide a solid foundation for future technologies and technical spin-offs to come?? https://ow.ly/FJ8450UaOBP ?? Check out Rubin Observatory's #CommissioningNotes! ??
?? Rubin #CommissioningNotes, entry 2??: when you turn it on and it works ?? Initial tests with Rubin's test camera, ComCam, showed the telescope was already nearly aligned before even looking at the sky — a testament to decades of work! With further testing, our team continued to improve data quality?? There's months of work ahead to refine Rubin's systems. The team's focus right now is the "active optics" systems that help support the telescope's mirrors and maintain the precise shape needed for crisp images. For more details, catch up on these recent updates from earlier this month! ?? (Nov. 1): https://lnkd.in/gXYFPvY7 ?? (Nov. 8): https://lnkd.in/gXh--y8n ??: H. Stockebrand

In this image of the week, the Milky Way dominates the sky as it stretches over Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, a Program of NSF NOIRLab, which is located high in the mountains of Chile, at an altitude of 2200 meters (7200 feet). Pictured here are telescopes operated by Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO). LCO operates a network of telescopes spread out longitudinally across the northern and southern hemispheres. The strategic positioning of its telescopes means that LCO always has a telescope in darkness and it can coordinate its telescopes to quickly collect data that would be missed by a telescope at a single location. This is designed with one strategic goal in mind: uninterrupted monitoring of sudden, unpredictable transient events such as supernovae and variable stars. ?????? A great collaboration!
When you’re tasked with maintaining a telescope that brings the universe into focus, precision is essential. Recently, Enrique Arevalo, Supervisor of Field Support Services at HEIDENHAIN North America, traveled to Hilo, Hawaii, to help NSF NOIRLab elevate the performance of the Gemini North Telescope, an instrumental tool in cosmic research. With six critical measuring systems positioning the telescope for capturing images of the universe, Enrique provided hands-on training and data collection support using our PWM 21 testing equipment. Through a combination of closed-loop data analysis and detailed visual inspections, we optimized the existing feedback systems, offering insights and recommendations for future upgrades to extend system reliability. As the Gemini North Telescope continues to facilitate groundbreaking research for universities worldwide, we’re proud to be part of this journey, delivering the precision and expertise that help keep its view of the cosmos clear. BIG NEWS: A new study using the first year of data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) has traced how galaxies have clustered over the past 11 billion years, providing the most precise test to date of how gravity behaves at very large scales ?? DESI is a state-of-the-art instrument that can capture light from 5000 galaxies simultaneously. ?? It was constructed, and is operated, with funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science. DESI is mounted on the National Science Foundation (NSF) Nicholas U. Mayall 4-meter Telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory, a Program of NSF NOIRLab. The program is now in its fourth of five years surveying the sky and is set to observe roughly 40 million galaxies and quasars by the time the project ends. ?? How will the #USELTP lead to revolutionary discoveries? One answer is the dual-hemisphere system. With two telescopes covering the Southern & Northern Hemisphere, US astronomers will be able to study objects anywhere in the sky. Get our factsheet ?? https://lnkd.in/eux6mAug

Soar above SOAR with us ?? The 4.1-meter Southern Astrophysical Research (SOAR) Telescope, located at Cerro Pachón in Chile, sits on a rocky ridge 2713 meters (8900 feet) above sea level. SOAR is among the foremost observatories available to astronomers in the southern hemisphere, producing high-quality images at wavelengths from optical to near-infrared. ??: NOIRLab/NSF/AURA/T. Why two? Because we get twice the night! The two #USELTP telescopes are separated not only in latitude but also in longitude. When the Chilean night is ending for the Giant Magellan Telescope, the Hawaiian night is entering its prime for the Thirty Meter Telescope. Astronomers will be able to take advantage of the extended night and be nearly twice as likely to have a telescope in the dark when needed to rapidly follow up on a new discovery?? https://ow.ly/grfK50U6KXQ ?? In this image of the week, Gemini South, one half of the International Gemini Observatory which is supported in part by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and operated by NSF NOIRLab, sits high atop Cerro Pachón in Chile, surrounded by gems of the southern night sky. One of these gems, the center of our Milky Way, is also the center of this image. Petr Horálek, the photographer, is a NOIRLab Audiovisual Ambassador.
