“Of all the damage Team Trump may be wreaking, the assault on climate policies is the most existential. And the threat extends far beyond the borders of America to those who have no vote in the matter.” —Nathan Gardels #trump #climate #climatecrisis https://lnkd.in/gWAbfMEU

“The case of the dingo strikes at the very heart of the ecological conundrum of ecosystem change — of what it means to belong somewhere in nature. Fundamentally, the dingo forces us to question the coherence of ‘nativeness’ as a meaningful concept.” —Tristan S?bye Rapp #australia #dingo #conservation https://lnkd.in/gntp8ibe

So happy to share this news! Congrats Maria Farrell and Robin Berjon!
Writer, Advisor and Keynote Speaker on Technology and the Future (Self-employed, so please do not ask me to work for free.)
Well! I genuinely did not believe the email when it arrived yesterday - it took a follow-up from the editors two hours later to make me realise it wasn't a mistake, it was really happening, and Robin Berjon's and my article "We need to rewild the internet", edited by Tami Abdollah and published in Noema Magazine, has been selected for the Best of American Science and Nature Writing annual anthology!!! I've been a huge fan of this anthology for years (and also its sister publications in essays, short fiction and science fiction) but genuinely never imagined anything I wrote could ever be in it. We are just beside ourselves with the thrill and disbelief of it all. I cannot wait to hold that book in my hands (and read everyone else in it). https://lnkd.in/euuBj4Wz

This was shocking — in a most excellent and pleasant way — news to receive. I have some of those anthologies (which are commonly found in bookshops) but like Maria Farrell I had never imagined being in one! It so happens that since the piece came out, the geopolitical moment became particularly inviting to rewilding the internet. Fittingly, it's an idea that's not done growing!

“If you really want to have a Department of Government Efficiency, the first thing you’ve got to do is not fire bureaucrats. You actually have to free them from all of these mountains of regulations.” —Francis Fukuyama #unitedstates #politics #trump #elon

Read Nathan Gardels' extended commentary on my recent “Statecraft as Soulcraft” article for Noema Magazine He and I explore how today’s authoritarians link their legitimacy, stability, and popularity to promoting specific visions of the good life.

Excellent Sunday afternoon read from Professor Michael Levin for Noema Magazine that takes a look at the metaphors we use to distinguish between organic and non-organic beings and challenges some of the assumptions around what we consider to be machines and/or living things. Very much in the style of Donna Haraway, he advocates at once for #pragmatism, for empirically testing the methods we use for interrogating systems that imbricate the organic and the machine and to keep an open mind when categorising which is which. For fans of Douglas Hofstadter, #cybernetics, #systems and #ConsequentialCategories. https://lnkd.in/gx7QA3Fb
