Excited to announce that our article has been published in Fertility & Sterility! Together with Alexis Cirel, we make a compelling case for recognizing and supporting social surrogacy as a critical step in honoring patient autonomy. Our message is clear: Surrogacy for nonmedical reasons deserves acceptance and support across the United States. The safeguards currently in place for surrogacy work equally well regardless of medical necessity, upholding a consistent standard of care. Allowing subjective physician value judgments only serves to undermine patient rights and stall progress in women's health. Furthermore, most state laws and legal parentage frameworks impose no requirement for medical justification, reinforcing the need for broader acceptance of social surrogacy. Social surrogacy is more than an option—it’s a powerful leap forward for autonomy and equality. By empowering individuals to make choices that align with their needs and values, we build a stronger foundation for patient rights and reproductive freedom.
