As we step into 2025, one belief grows stronger with each passing year: the American Southwest is at a profound inflection point. The Brookings Institution recently released a compelling research report in their new series examining the state of Latino-and Hispanic-owned businesses. This report, authored by Andre M. Perry and Manann Donoghoe, provides the very own insights that reaffirm this perspective and highlight the transformative momentum underway. The facts are undeniable. The Southwest stands uniquely poised at the crossroads of economic opportunity and cultural renaissance, fueled by the vitality of its Hispanic population. Census projections anticipate that the Hispanic population in the United States will grow by nearly 30% by 2060, comprising more than 27% of the total population. This remarkable growth highlights the imperative of investing in Hispanic communities—not merely as a moral obligation but as a strategic cornerstone for securing America’s economic future. Far from being a passive demographic shift, this population growth is catalyzing economic innovation, cultural creativity, and resilience. The Southwest, particularly cities like my beloved hometown of El Paso, as well as San Antonio, Austin, McAllen, and Laredo, serves as a living blueprint for what is possible. These cities exemplify the potential unleashed when communities and businesses embrace Hispanic entrepreneurial spirit and cultural richness. Together, they are redefining what growth looks like, not only for the region but for the nation as a whole. In the article below, Norma A. Padrón, Ph.D. and I dive deeper into the economic opportunity and the cultural renaissance of the Southwest.

Andy Vargas-Hernandez and Alejandro Mu?oz Mendieta, MBA of No Border Ventures have been breaking down barriers for as long as they can remember. Neither co-founder had the typical #VC trajectory. As immigrants and sons of immigrants from El Paso, Texas, Alejandro and Andy grew up bilingual and bicultural. Alejandro went from living in Juarez, Mexico, with his single mother to eventually breaking into Wall Street, getting an MBA from Harvard Business School, and then building a successful career as an operator. Most recently, he was CFO at Higo, where he built an online loan operation that lent $30M to SMEs and raised $63M in venture capital. Andy was the first in his family to go to college. He earned his degree while also on an ocean rowing team that raced across the Atlantic Ocean and a soccer team that won a state championship. He began his career as a trader and in capital markets in the energy space before going on to work on AI/ML, cloud infrastructure, and client acquisition at Amazon Web Services. A recent MBA graduate from the Wharton School, Andy also has considerable experience and success with deal sourcing and due diligence for early-stage investments at numerous VC firms.“ Andy and I call ourselves good troublemakers,” says Alejandro Mu?oz Mendieta. “We’ve been building careers on the back of resilience, entering rooms that typically aren’t made for folks like us; and we’re looking to help entrepreneurs who are also achieving every ounce of success through scrappiness, hard work, ingenuity, and calculated risk-taking.” No Border Ventures is a Texas-based, industry-agnostic, seed and pre-seed fund with a regional focus beyond the typical, coastal geographies. They’re looking to companies based in the Southwest and Mountain regions in the U.S. as well as in cross-border startups that span the U.S. and Mexico. At No Border Ventures, we′re excited to be part of the movement that will change the face of venture capital and entrepenruship, and that can only occur when you have a strong and vibrant community that believes in that change. I had the pleasure of participating and immersing myself into two of these communities last week: Recast Capital held its first ever invite-only Summit and it was a testament to the work that Courtney Russell McCrea and Sara Zulkosky are doing to place capital in the hands of diverse investment decision makers. The number of conversations and friendships built was incredible. Meanwhile, the opportunities to connect with both GPs and LPs at a deeper level will only strengthen our collective effort. Big shout out to the rest of the team that made the Summit possible: Ava Alemazkoor, Caroline Fernandez, Ethan Finkelstein VC Unleashed held the #ShiftVC conference, which gathered more than 100 BIPOC folks, all in support of changing the face of VC. The discussions and relationships built will truly create access and space for diversity. Thank you Tanvi Lal and Michelle Dhansinghani for your leadership and for building a platform we can continue to build-off of. It was fantastic to reconnect with: Anna Garcia, CFA,Jackie DiMonte, Emily McMahan, Lenore Karafa, Jacob Afriat, Lauren Wagner, Carli Sapir, Madeline Darcy, Beatriz Franco, Antonio Key, Yohei Nakajima, Jenny Barba, Jeff Chu, Vanessa Gutierrez, Veronica Juarez, Jacob (Jake) Lefker, MBA, and Monica Martens and to build new friendships with: Chi Achebe, Shalanda Armstrong, ethan austin, Lister Delgado, Elizabeth Edwards, Marcos Fernandez, Jessica Karr, Kimberley Nixon, Brita Rosenheim, Helene Servillon, Aaron Samuels, Allison Barr Allen, Benjamin Jacques Salazar
