Today I was scheduled to facilitate an impactful session titled “Using Your Emotional Intelligence.” In a world where Black Women have been pushing through hard things for an eternity, I, along with the leadership team at this school, decided that was not what we wanted to choose today. This staff got up, got dressed, showed up with a smile, welcomed scholars, taught at a high level, comforted each other and scholars as needed, AND stayed for development today despite what they were feeling. This was an opportunity to actually use our emotional intelligence. I opened the session and vulnerably shared that as a Black Woman who is also a “recovering hypocrite,” I could not do business as usual. There are moments we have to push through. Today was not that. We took our capes off and focused on saving ourselves.
