Exciting news to share with much gratitude to Direct Relief and Oregon Health & Science University Foundation ?
It is the goal of Northwest Native American Center of Excellence at OHSU to sustainably address the health care needs of all people by increasing the number of American Indians and Alaska Natives in the health professions workforce, and a recent grant from Direct Relief helps make that vision possible. Direct Relief recently gave $100,000 from the Fund for Health Equity to help launch the?Tilikum Summer Health Experience, a?free 5-week hybrid summer enrichment program specifically designed for American Indian/Alaska Native freshman and sophomore college students. Students will receive academic training, mentorship, and hands-on exposure to the health professions, all while staying connected to their cultural identity. “I think it’s important for medical students and future providers to know the importance of beading as actual medicine and a way of healing,” Bauer said, “and to think about different ways that traditional indigenous practices can be medicine, and think about the ways they can help their patients through that lens.” Meet Temerity Bauer, a second year Tribal Health PRIME student, who leads beading workshops for fellow students during their lunch hour. Temerity is passionate about teaching her fellow classmates the importance of beading in Native American culture, community building, healing and medicine. Our School of Medicine has a small but growing number of American Indian and Alaska Native students and most, like Temerity, belong to the two-year-old Tribal Health PRIME pathway. The pathway, or track, customizes medical education for students who want to be doctors for California’s urban, rural and tribal communities, which face significant health disparities.
