Four NMU students have been selected to participate in the second cohort of NMU's Rural Leadership Fellowship Program, a public-private partnership with Invest UP that promotes immersive, project-based learning while also supporting U.P. economic and community development projects. The fellows and their project partners are: Aimee Doyle, Marquette County Emergency Management; Travis Garvey, Michigan Office of Rural Prosperity; Rachel Raak, Village of Laurium; and Miki Rogers, Partridge Creek Compost in Ishpeming.

Northern Michigan University's DeVos Art Museum is accepting submissions through March 18 for its “North of the 45th: 2025 Annual Upper Midwest Juried Exhibition.” Artists living in Michigan, Wisconsin or Minnesota north of the 45th parallel are invited to submit their works from all media.

Former Wildcat football player and NMU alumnus Robert Saleh has returned to the San Francisco 49ers as defensive coordinator. Saleh had previously worked with the 49ers from 2017-2020, then served as head coach of the New York Jets for three seasons. The Dearborn native attended NMU, where he started at tight end for four years and earned all-conference honors before graduating with a bachelor's degree in financial management in 2001.

Northern Michigan University alumni played important roles in two of the 2025 Academy Award nominees for Best Animated Feature Film. Three were involved in Disney and Pixar's Inside Out 2, the highest-grossing animated film in history: Kelsey Mann ('98), director; Dan Scanlon ('87), executive producer; and Neil Helm ('05), lead supervising crowds animator. Northern graduate Joshua Brock ('09) served as modeling lead for The Wild Robot, DreamWorks Animation's nominee in the same category. The Oscars will be presented Sunday, March 2.

Northern Michigan University President Brock Tessman has been appointed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to serve on the Michigan Education Trust (MET) Board of Directors. The MET is a qualified tuition program that provides tax exemption for the trust and tax exemption of earnings for contract participants who use MET funds to pay for qualified higher education expenses.

The Winter Semester Job Fair, taking place on Wednesday, February 26 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Northern Center, is an opportunity for companies and organizations to discuss full-time jobs, part-time jobs, summer employment and internships with students of all majors and alumni in all industries. There is no cost for students or alumni to attend this event.
