The 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports announced by President Trump last month officially take effect today. In response, some countries have introduced retaliatory measures. Canada is set to announce C$29.8 billion in retaliatory tariffs later today, while the European Union will impose counter-tariffs on up to 26 billion euros ($28 billion) worth of U.S. goods next month. Did you catch NMTA Director's #TariffTimeline overview during an "Exporting Updates" seminar at the City of ABQ's Small Business Center? If not, NMTA offers free consultations where our team is ready to tackle your pressing international trade questions.
It’s been a whirlwind of #tariff headlines! Yesterday, I presented a timeline of current and proposed tariffs from the U.S. and its trading partners, highlighting key changes and their implications for global trade. Alongside experts Indalecio Vallejos (U.S. Commercial Service) and Frankie Hermosillo (City of Albuquerque Economic Development Department), we provided the business community with the knowledge and resources needed to navigate shifting market dynamics.

President Trump has announced a delay in the implementation of tariffs on Mexican products until April 2, provided they fall under the USMCA free trade agreement. This decision follows discussions with Mexico’s President Sheinbaum. A similar measure for Canadian products is expected to be announced later today, according to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Last week, New Mexico had the privilege of hosting 23 representatives from 15 Taiwanese organizations, all members of the Taiwanese Display Union Association (TDUA), following their participation in CES. The delegation explored New Mexico's unique landmarks, including Santa Teresa, White Sands, Heart of the Desert, Roswell, and Sandia Peak, while meeting with organizations focusing on identifying AI applications and future market trends. With the support of our incredible partners—New Mexico Economic Development Department, Albuquerque Regional Economic Alliance, New Mexico Partnership, City of Albuquerque Economic Development Department, Ideum, Intel Corporation, Netflix, and COSMIAC—we proudly showcased New Mexico’s innovative technologies and opportunities in the display and AI sector. We are excited about the connections made and the potential for collaboration with these global leaders. Together, we continue to position New Mexico as a hub for technological advancement and international business. #Innovation #Technology #GlobalCollaboration #NewMexico
