Food waste is a massive challenge—1/3 of the food produced in the U.S. is never eaten. At NMS, we believe the way we've always done things isn't always the best way. That's why we're driving change through smarter food systems, sustainable practices, and industry partnerships. ? Recently, Amy Foote (NMS Director of Indigenous Cuisine), Bec McDorman, MS, RDN, LD, FAND (NMS Regional Registered Dietitian), and Darcy Moxon (Providence Sustainability Manager, Alaska) led a powerful discussion on Food Waste Prevention and Diversion Efforts in Industry. ? Their presentation covered: ??? The Food Life Cycle—from harvest to diversion ?? Menu planning, procurement, and production strategies that minimize waste ?? How partnerships can amplify impact ?? Real-world examples of how NMS has successfully reduced food waste ? Amy Foote put it best: "If we want different results, we have to change our approach. Every ingredient has a story—it's on us honor it by using it completely make sure it doesn't end in the trash.?

A year ago, the Qavartarvik Customer Lodge, or "a place to sleep," opened its doors in Bethel, creating a warm, welcoming space for patients and families traveling for healthcare services. Managed by NMS in partnership with the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation, this 109-room lodge has quickly become a vital resource for the community. We marked this milestone with a menu inspired by Alaska's bounty—mini fry bread with spruce tip jelly, halibut street tacos, beach asparagus salsa, and Yup’ik dried blueberry & white chocolate cookies, to name a few. Every bite was a tasty nod to the region’s culture and flavors. At NMS, taking care of people is what we do best. From food service to security and janitorial support, we’re here to make sure every guest feels at home. Here’s to one year of exceptional care—and many more to come!
