How does intermittent fasting affect the quality of your sleep? You probably heard the term intermittent fasting before. Intermittent fasting is a term that has been gaining popularity over the past decade as a biohack to enhance longevity and aid with weight loss. You basically reduce your feeding window down to 10, 8, 6 hours per day or less. And the rest of the time... well you're just fasting. This has multiple beneficial effects on your body. Intermittent fasting helps: ? Burn visceral fat ? Regulate blood sugar levels ? Activate autophagy, the cell's self-clearing mechanism But how can it improve your sleep quality? When we are having a meal, such as dinner, we will spike our blood insulin levels to a certain degree, depending on how much carbohydrates we had. If this spike is too high, after 4-5 hours, the insulin level in your blood will bounce back from the spike, and may go below baseline. When this happens, your body goes into panic mode, thinking you might be dying! To compensate, your cortisol levels (stress hormone) will increase. And this cortisol spike will wake you up. Most of us have experienced that. Waking up in the middle of the night, without a reason. You thought that maybe you had to go to the bathroom, but your bladder is empty. It was the cortisol spike that woke you up! Having dinner 5-6 hours before bedtime, solves this problem, how cool is that??
