I had the pleasure of producing an impactful article for Cell & Gene (Life Science Connect) on the importance of HLA high-resolution testing for finding potential stem cell matches. In the US, 25-80% of patients are unable to find a matched unrelated donation (MUD), with a significant gap affecting patients with ethnically diverse backgrounds. This article explores important research on mismatched unrelated donations (MMUD) and how this could bridge the need gap. My article highlights the research by CIBMTR (Center for International Blood & Marrow Transplant Research) and NMDP showed that the overall survival of patients with MMUD is comparable to MUD and matched related donations, thus providing a safe alternative when a matched donation is not available. And all of this is possible with NGS testing in stem cell donations. NGS HLA typing has high throughput, deeper sequencing information, and higher accuracy compared to other tests. With the increased matching of unrelated donors and patients over time in the U.S. and globally (because of the breakthroughs by NMDP and CIBMTR), we can expect an increase in NGS testing as unrelated donations typically require higher resolution testing compared to related donations. Just days after losing her mother to cancer, Elyssa found out she was a potential match for someone battling leukemia.
