This Women's History Month, we're shining a spotlight on Margaret Chavez, the incredible Hidalgo County Health Council Coordinator! In a rural county of just 4,160 people spread across 1,583 square miles, Margaret's dedication is making a powerful impact. Margaret's proudest moments come from working with youth, hearing their stories, and witnessing their successes. "They are one of the biggest reasons why we all do this kind of work!" she says. Her own 8-year-old son, Jesse-Rey, is her "community warrior," witnessing firsthand the tangible results of her efforts. In 2018, Hidalgo County faced a devastating reality: the highest suicide rate in the state. Thanks to Margaret, the Hidalgo Couty Health Council and community partners tireless efforts, the suicide rate has decreased significantly . "It's still bittersweet because lives are still being lost. We will continue to focus on this pressing priority and the Council will work towards creating a more supportive and understanding community," Margaret emphasizes. Hidalgo County Health Council hosts 2 Mental Health Vigils per year, alongside Mental Health Awareness, which was most recently held during the Jessie Darnell Memorial 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament. The Health Councils and youth came together to design this year's T-Shirt. Margaret's commitment to community health, especially mental health, is truly inspiring. Thank you, Margaret, for your unwavering dedication and for empowering the next generation! #NMHealthCouncils #WomensHistoryMonth #CommunityHealth #RuralHealth #MentalHealthAwareness #HidalgoCounty #Inspiration New Mexico Department of Health New Mexico Association of Counties New Mexico State Legislature New Mexico Health Care Authority New Mexico Behavioral Healthcare Valeria Alarcón
