The streets of this new district in the Netherlands will be home to kids, pedestrians and bikes: no cars allowed. World Economic Forum reports on the soon-to-be developed district in Utrecht that prioritizes people and sustainability over cars. Merwede will be almost completely car free. Walls and courtyards will be covered by greenery and rooftops will feature solar panels. As there's only room for parking for 1 out of 3 households, the 12.000 residents will share a fleet of cars that are parked on the outskirts. Nearby public transportation connects them to all parts of the Netherlands. Multiple stakeholders were involved in the design, including BURA urbanism, Gemeente Utrecht and 10 owners.
