Let’s create cities for people, not just cars. In the early 1970s, the Dutch city of Utrecht, concreted over its 900-year-old moat to make way for a 12-lane motorway. In 2020, the canal was restored back to its former glory, cutting down the amount of cars on the city’s roads. Guess what? Nobody misses the motorway… Project by OKRA landscape architects. Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Mari?lle Paul visited the Renaissance School of the Arts in East Harlem to experience firsthand its vibrant arts program and strong focus on community inclusion. Guided by students Misiyiah and Isaiah, Minister Paul and Consul General Ahmed Dadou toured the school’s music and theater rooms, learning about initiatives designed to support students facing language or social challenges. During a dynamic group discussion, 15 students from the NYC Youth Ambassador Program engaged the Minister with thoughtful questions about the Dutch education system, her political motivations, and how the Netherlands addresses issues like bullying. Visits like these are invaluable for exchanging ideas and learning from one another, ensuring that education systems continue to evolve and improve. By sharing experiences and best practices across borders, we can create more inclusive, supportive, and effective learning environments for all students. A big thank you to the Renaissance School of the Arts and its amazing students for hosting us. Thank you to Commisioner Edward Mermelstein, the NYC Office of the Mayor for International Affairs, and NYC Department of Education for connecting the Netherlands and New York City!
