In 2022 the five-year, $316 million #Ghana Power Compact came to a close. nLine sensor data supported the evaluation of a line bifurcation project under the Compact. Anecdotally, we know that reliable, good quality electricity is essential for micro, small and medium-sized businesses' operations and productivity in the Global South. However, rarely do we have the data to understand the exact nature and scale of power quality (voltage) and reliability (outages) for businesses connected to the national grid. This past week we installed electricity monitoring sensors with 48 grid-connected micro and small businesses throughout #Freetown, #SierraLeone to measure the nature and variation of power outages and voltage quality. This city-wide monitoring will provide ground-truth data to pin point commercial areas within Freetown that experience better or worse electricity, and to better understand the role that electricity plays in businesses' productivity and decision making. #SDG7 #electricityquality #electricityreliability #remotemonitoring #SierraLeone

Since 2018, with the support of Millennium Challenge Corporation and Millennium Development Authority and in partnership with researchers from University of California, Berkeley and University of Pennsylvania, nLine has developed and deployed more than 1,200 power monitoring sensors across #Accra as part of an independent evaluation of the #GhanaPowerCompact’s “ECG Financial and Operational Turnaround Project”. With more than 9 million data points over 5 years, the dataset offers comprehensive insights into the quality and reliability of grid electricity received by consumers in #Ghana. The data shows that the best year for quality and reliability of Accra’s grid over the last five years was in 2022. The data also shows that spells of low voltage were reduced and average voltage increased in project areas (transformer installations increased average voltage by an additional 5V to Ghana’s nominal voltage of 230V). ?? Last week Monday marked a milestone as #nLine officially launched the #GridWatchAccraDataset which captures over 50,000 outages and 9 million data points across Accra! ?? It is incredible to be part of a team driving change through data and actively working to enhance the quality and reliability of electricity in Ghana. The turnout was truly inspiring, with key stakeholders from the energy sector eager to leverage this ground-breaking dataset to inform targeted infrastructure investments. Their presence underscores one key fact: Ghana is at the forefront of data-driven infrastructure development in Africa. As the UN General Assembly meets and commitments for new energy investments are being made, power quality monitoring and data must be at the centre of those decisions. Understanding where to prioritize investments and upgrades can be the difference between promises and real impact.
