Improving the reach, reliability, and resilience of the world’s most critical infrastructure, starting with power grids.
关于我们
Started in the Electrical Engineering department at the University of California, Berkeley, nLine works to improve the reach, reliability, and resilience of the world’s most critical infrastructure, starting with power grids. We are a measurement company, providing data-driven actionable insights for utilities, regulators, investors, multilateral and bilateral organizations, researchers, and public interest groups. Under-the-hood we design and deploy customized sensors to continuously estimate key performance indicators of critical infrastructure at high-resolution. Our mission is to measure and improve the performance of critical infrastructure in order to meet the needs of all people and support sustainable, inclusive economic development. We are looking to grow! Reach out to us to join our team.

Urban electricity inequities, particularly poor power quality and reliability (PQR), are widespread in sub-Saharan Africa. However, there is often a lack of geographical PQR data and established frameworks to assess these urban inequities and guide equitable electricity solutions. We recently published a paper where we propose a conceptual framework that combines #energyjustice, #capability, and #multidimensionalpoverty theories, along with #powersystem concepts, to quantify PQR inequities. We analyzed one year of nLine sensor data from Accra, Ghana, examining the extent of PQR inequities, the role of multidimensional poverty in exacerbating these inequities, and the impact of PQR on household domestic capabilities. https://lnkd.in/gPv97QCM Olufolahan Osunmuyiwa

Re-examining Healthcare Electrification Metrics: Are We Measuring Success Correctly? Electricity is the backbone of modern healthcare, powering critical equipment and life-saving services. Yet, in sub-Saharan Africa nearly 50% of hospitals lack reliable electricity access and 15% have no access at all. In response, renewable energy solutions are being deployed widely to improve the reliability of electricity supply at health facilities. In our latest blog we explore?why facility-level metrics of electricity supply and reliability may not tell the whole story of electricity access. Using data from sensors we installed at 17 hospitals under the Sierra Leone Healthcare Electrification Project, we reveal how?room-level metrics, especially in critical areas like ICUs and NICUs, sometimes differ from those at the facility level. This disparity leads to the question: While facility-level improvements in electricity supply are often measured after renewable energy solutions are installed, how effectively do these benefits extend to individual departments, especially critical care areas where reliable electricity supply matters most? ?? In 2022 the five-year, $316 million #Ghana Power Compact came to a close. nLine sensor data supported the evaluation of a line bifurcation project under the Compact. This blog, adapted from Millennium Challenge Corporation's final learnings from this impact evaluation, highlights lessons for the design of future power infrastructure programs. https://lnkd.in/g22m2ahp

Anecdotally, we know that reliable, good quality electricity is essential for micro, small and medium-sized businesses' operations and productivity in the Global South. However, rarely do we have the data to understand the exact nature and scale of power quality (voltage) and reliability (outages) for businesses connected to the national grid. This past week we installed electricity monitoring sensors with 48 grid-connected micro and small businesses throughout #Freetown, #SierraLeone to measure the nature and variation of power outages and voltage quality. This city-wide monitoring will provide ground-truth data to pin point commercial areas within Freetown that experience better or worse electricity, and to better understand the role that electricity plays in businesses' productivity and decision making. #SDG7 #electricityquality #electricityreliability #remotemonitoring #SierraLeone
