In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we are hosting a special webinar featuring Joao Vilca Soto, CEO & Board Member of Ruta Vida. Joao Vilca Soto is an Incan Environmental Activist in the Pacific Northwest. After completing field experience in the Amazon jungle and Iceland and graduating with a Bachelor's in Sustainable Practices from Cascadia College. Joao started the nonprofit Ruta Verde Sustainability, focused on developing culturally-relevant solutions for climate adaptation in Washington State and in Northern Coastal Peru. Joao is also the Co-Chair for BECU's Environmental Sustainability ERG, helping to advocate for environmentally-friendly services and resources for their employees and members. Through his sustainable studies, research, and field experiences, Joao saw that the projects that adopted Indigenous practices of working with the land resulted in greater success. This has led him to research more about the history and science behind different ancient practices for land management from cultures throughout the Americas, learning more about the history of cultures like the Inca, Aztec, Zapotec, Quichua, Moche, Kogi (and more), and the history of the plants that grew alongside these ancient empires. Join us to learn a bit about the history of our ancient cultures, and how they worked in synchrony with their environments to adapt to climate change centuries ago. Remembering the 1943 Zoot Suit Riots for Hispanic Heritage Month: The Zoot Suit Riots were a series of violent clashes that erupted in Los Angeles, California, in June 1943, primarily between U.S. servicemen stationed in Southern California and Mexican American youth who were identifiable by their distinctive "zoot suits." These baggy suits, characterized by oversized jackets, broad shoulders, and wide-legged pants, were a popular style in the 1940s, particularly among Mexican American, African American, and Filipino youth. However, they became a symbol of defiance and cultural pride in the face of racial tensions. At the time, Los Angeles was experiencing significant racial and social tensions as many white Americans viewed the Mexican American community with suspicion. These tensions were heightened during World War II, as young Mexican Americans in zoot suits were seen as "unpatriotic" due to the fabric rationing required for the war effort. The riots began after a series of skirmishes between U.S. servicemen and local Mexican American youth in the city’s downtown area. On June 3, 1943, a group of white sailors claimed they were attacked by young Mexican Americans wearing zoot suits. In retaliation, hundreds of servicemen roamed the streets of Los Angeles over the following nights, assaulting zoot suiters and stripping them of their clothing. The police did little to stop the attacks and often arrested the Mexican American victims instead of the aggressors. The violence spread throughout Los Angeles for nearly a week, with servicemen attacking anyone they found wearing a zoot suit. While Mexican Americans were the primary targets, African American and Filipino youth who wore similar styles also faced harassment. The media at the time sensationalized the riots, often framing the Mexican American community as delinquent and downplaying the role of racism in the violence. The Zoot Suit Riots revealed the deep racial tensions in the United States during the war and brought attention to the discrimination faced by Mexican Americans and other minorities. It highlighted the cultural divide between Mexican American youth, who embraced the zoot suit as a symbol of pride and identity, and the broader white American society, which viewed their fashion and behavior as a challenge to traditional values. After the riots, the city of Los Angeles banned the wearing of zoot suits in public, though this only served to further stigmatize Mexican American youth. The riots also led to increased awareness of the struggles faced by Latino communities in the U.S. and set the stage for future civil rights activism in the Latino community during the 1960s and 1970s.
