Northwestern Pritzker School of Law Gender Equity Initiative

When I was in the fifth grade, I knew I wanted to attend Harvard Law School and become a lawyer, but, with no lawyers in my family, the path to my dream was unclear. Danielle, the fifth grader full of hopes and dreams, was the inspiration for Determined to Rise, a one day law and leadership academy for middle schools girls to provide them access, exposure, and inspiration to chase their own dreams in law and beyond. Ms. JD was fortunate enough to cap off a busy month of October programming with two Determined to Rise programs at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law (in partnership with Anika Gray and the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law Gender Equity Initiative) and at Northeastern University School of Law (in partnership with the Rahsaan D. Hall the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts). Spending two days with these amazing young ladies, including two intense mock trials, was pure joy and fuel for us as women in law to keep carving a path for these future leaders to follow. Recently, the GEI had the distinct pleasure of partnering with Just The Beginning – A Pipeline Organization to host a Middle School Law Camp for middle schoolers from two Southside Chicago schools ( Carter G Woodson Elementary and Beasley Academic Center)at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law . The students got the wonderful opportunity to learn about intellectual property law (facilitated by Legally Black) as well as engage with and learn from Judge Andrea R Wood, Northern District of Illinois , JD students (Latianna Dumas and Jehovahnie Saint Rose) and practising lawyers about their path to the law. We are so thankful to Missy O. Jeje and Antonette N. Smith, CNP for giving us the chance to further our mission of ?inspiring children from underserved communities to see themselves as future members of the legal profession.

Last week we welcomed 55 middle-school students to our Determined to Rise Academies in Chicago and Boston!? ? These young leaders got the chance to learn about the legal profession and see themselves as future lawyers. Another amazing panel discussion on an extremely important topic!

Last week, the GEI partnered with Northwestern Master of Science in Law and the Women's Leadership Coalition to hold a panel discussion on Access to Infertility Treatments: the Good , the Bad and the Ugly. Our panel of experts Minnoli Aya Blair Matthews, JD, MPA Amanda Adeleye, MD and Mary Ellen Pavone had a lively discussion on economic barriers, legislation governing access to insurance coverage, and the impact of the Dobbs decision on providers and individuals seeking infertility treatments. The discussion also brought to the fore broader questions about the US's record on advancing reproductive justice, including the high maternal mortality rates for black women in the US. We would like to thank our brilliant panellists and moderator, Katherine Powell from Women's Leadership Coalition as well as the GEI's program assistant Isabella Wynne-Markham, Evan Goldberg and Leslie Oster.
