Up to 42% of law firms with 100 or more employees have experienced a data security breach, with the average cost reaching $7.5 million. While cyberattacks have hit businesses across all industries, including major corporations like Boeing, AT&T and Ticketmaster, law firms are frequent targets due to their reliance on cloud-based systems, lack of cybersecurity personnel and slow incident response times. Thanks to Paul Ihme, Mike Mooney, Karen Painter Randall and Violet Sullivan, CIPP/US CIPM for presenting a timely NJICLE seminar on how to keep your firm safe from cyberattacks and what to do if you suspect your firm has been breached. Here are a few quick tips from the program for firms with vulnerabilities: -Update outdated systems and software.? -Invest in employee training against cyberattacks.? -Have controls that limit access to data, apps and networks. -Understand the risks of working with third-party vendors and cloud services. The NJSBA YLD had a great Wills For Heroes event over the weekend at the Jackson Volunteer Fire Station. The event serviced 12 people, including their spouses, and provided them with wills, advanced directives and durable/health care powers of attorney. A big thank you to all the volunteers, and especially Kaitlin Hackett and William Dungey who were instrumental in organizing this event, as well as to our sponsors, including Hyland Levin Shapiro LLP, Porzio Bromberg & Newman P.C. and Strategic Wealth Solutions and the law students who served as witnesses and observed the process. The New Jersey State Bar Association appeared as amicus in Department of Children and Families v. R.L. to urge that the state Appellate Division abolish the “Not Established” standard in child welfare cases. NJSBA Past President Jeralyn Lawrence argued that the state’s four-tier system of evaluating child abuse and neglect allegations is an unfair “catch-all” standard that damages people’s lives, reputations and child-parent relationships. “Not Established is nothing more than an allegation. As a result, almost any baseless allegation could fall within this standardless definition,” Lawrence said. In addition to Lawrence, NJSBA members Matheu D. Nunn, Esq. and Brian G. Paul wrote the brief.? Read more about the Association’s advocacy program on the NJSBA’s website https://lnkd.in/e2umgfqm. #NJStateBar
