As data centers expand globally, their escalating energy and power demands have become critical for energy planning and grid management.? Utilities are addressing this demand by implementing more renewables and energy storage. According to the Preliminary Monthly Electric Generator Inventory report released late last year by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, battery storage and solar technologies are poised to provide the largest energy generating capacity additions to the U.S. grid in 2025. Of the 63 GW of planned utility-scale electric generating capacity additions: ?? Over 50% will come from solar? ?? Nearly one-third will be provided by battery storage? ?? 12% will be generated from wind Utility-scale battery storage represents a crucial component in successfully incorporating renewables into the grid. These systems enhance grid resiliency by serving as a secondary source of electricity to power intensive operations in data centers. The New Jersey Institute of Technology's M.S. in Power and Energy Systems, as well as its Graduate Certificates, train professionals to successfully navigate and lead in today’s power and energy field. The program offers specialized training in power system design, protection, and operation—skills that are increasingly valuable, as battery storage and renewables modernize today’s power infrastructure. Scholarships and assistantships are available to qualified applicants, making this career-accelerating education more accessible. Ready to power your future? ?? Grid modernization, Interconnection and Transmission New Jersey Institute of Technology’s Offshore Wind Bootcamp highlighted the need for U.S. grid updates, as addressed by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) of Energy’s grid modernization strategy announced in summer 2024.? The demand for electricity is far too great for the existing 100-year old grid to handle.? Renewables can help meet the demand, so upgrades in interconnection can help increase electricity capacity by connecting renewables to the grid. Projects such as Larabee Collector Station (LCS) in New Jersey, part of the NJ Clean Energy Corridor, will allow the State to modernize its energy grid through upgrades of existing high-voltage grid transmission infrastructure, helping to bolster the capacity and reliability of power supply through PJM Interconnection to 65 million customers in 13 states.? This example utilizes an accelerated transmission framework, one of several strategies included in the 2024 National Transmission Planning Study from the DOE. NJIT’s M.S. in Energy Power Systems is taught by five distinguished faculty who specialize in power systems, transmission and renewables.? Their projects have received funding from the National Science Foundation, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and DOE Office of Electricity.
