There is a critical connection between student achievement and neighborhood revitalization, economic opportunity and economic growth. Thank you Mayor Baraka for bringing attention to this vital issue. It is imperative for additional leaders to follow suit, advocating for the better outcomes for children and families without unfairly placing blame on them. Many times the focus is on dollars wasted, but what about the children whose lives and futures are wasted because they are not being prepared? Ensuring that every Newark school can provide all students with a quality education must be a priority for everyone.?

Newark Summit brought together developers and leaders from across the city, including Vivian Cox Fraser, head of Urban League of Essex County, Tahina Perez, head of Teach For America New Jersey and our CEO Barbara Martinez.

If we want more students from low income communities to graduate from college, we need to give them the tools to get there. Our very own Colleen Eskow testified earlier this week in support of A-929, a state bill that would do just that by ensuring that all NJ public colleges accept credits for passing AP and CLEP classes in high school. It's time to level the playing field.
