关于我们
The National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students (NISTS) exists to improve the lives of transfer students. Through research, education, and service, we support professionals who directly serve transfer students, as well as those who create transfer policy and conduct transfer-related research. NISTS bridges knowledge, policies, and practice by bringing together a wide range of stakeholders to explore the issues related to the transfer process in order to facilitate student success and degree completion. We partner with two- and four-year institutions, state agencies, higher education associations, foundations, and others committed to transfer student success. NISTS is located at the University of North Georgia.

NC Transfer Pros - Check out this virtual learning opportunity next week!
Associate Director of Research and Evaluation at the Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research
NC friends, if you work at a university or community college and interact with transfer students, please consider joining?the College Transfer Program Association (CTPA).?I'm grateful to be connected to CTPA and delighted to present research at their virtual conference next week. Did you know that a?fifth?of all NC transfer students earned an Applied Associate's degree (AAS) at their community college??AAS programs were not initially designed for transfer, but students - especially those in business, information technology, and criminal justice -?don't care.??They're enrolling in these programs at community colleges and transferring to UNC institutions in large numbers anyway. So, how do we help them be more successful? On April 1 at 9:00 am, I'll join Mark D'Amico in sharing the latest research on this key part of the our state's workforce pipeline. Virtual sessions are throughout the week and include a line-up of smart presenters offering practical advice for student advisors and leaders. Please email?([email protected]) from your work email account to join CTPA or attend any of the virtual conference sessions next week. NC State Belk Center

Transfer students make up a larger and more diverse share of learners than we often acknowledge. This isn’t just a policy challenge; it’s a human one. Too often, we see finger-pointing in transfer reform: sending institutions vs. receiving institutions, administrators vs. faculty, native students vs. transfer students. But we have an opportunity—and a responsibility—to depolarize these conversations and focus on solutions. At Aiken Technical College, Chad Crumbaker and his team are leading by example. They joined Ithaka S+R’s Transfer Explorer to eliminate the guesswork for students and ensure transfer agreements actually work in practice. Instead of frustration and credit loss, students can now see exactly how their coursework counts toward their degree - before they transfer. This is what common ground looks like in action. And it’s the kind of work we need more of in 2025. As more institutions step up to prioritize credit mobility, students will have a clearer, fairer path to completing their degrees. Because no one should have to start over just because they switched schools. Read more about this exemplar work in this week's #BeyondTransfer featured in Inside Higher Ed: https://lnkd.in/gcPwS8wB Thanks to: Christopher Buonocore Alex Humphreys Martin Kurzweil Emily Tichenor How is your institution tackling transfer reform this year? Drop your thoughts below. Let’s build momentum #BeyondTransfer. #HigherEd #CreditMobility #TransferStudents #StudentSuccess

We are excited to follow this work.
In Inside Higher Ed, Christopher Buonocore, Alex Humphreys, Emily Tichenor and I write about an exciting milestone: the public launch of the beta version of ITHAKA's national Transfer Explorer. Transfer Explorer beta site: https://lnkd.in/eqV3MxEA Inside Higher Ed Blog post: https://lnkd.in/e9TZekep The beta site allows any user to create a personal wallet of college courses they have taken or plan to take at one or more schools, and explore how those courses transfer and apply to degree requirements at participating schools. The data on how transfer courses count toward requirements are drawn directly from schools' source systems, ensuring the information is up to date and reliable. The first three participating schools are Aiken Technical College, Coastal Carolina University, Lander University, all part of South Carolina Commission of Higher Education. Dozens of additional transfer destinations from South Carolina, Washington, Connecticut, and the City University of New York will be added in the coming months. We will also be adding new functionality, such as the ability for users to include exams, certifications, military training, and other credit for prior learning to the wallet, and different ways of exploring the data. We're very grateful for the collaboration of our system and institutional partners, our data integration specialists at DXtera Institute, and our funders Ascendium Education Group, ECMC Foundation, Gates Foundation, The Heckscher Foundation for Children, The Ichigo Foundation, and The Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation. Check out the Inside Higher Ed blog and the beta site to learn more.

“The growth in transfers this fall is a further indication that students are adjusting postsecondary goals in response to changing education and labor market conditions,” said Doug Shapiro, Executive Director of the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center. “That’s good news, especially for those who are able to return from stopouts by finding colleges that better meet their needs.” https://lnkd.in/eDYG3KPY
?? — College transfer enrollment grew for the third straight year, up 4.4% in fall 2024, according to the Transfer Enrollment and Pathways report from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center: https://lnkd.in/eDYG3KPY ? Another great example of a transfer champion bringing internal and external partners together to work on transfer student success. Thanks for sharing and for this reminder, Rachel Fulton, "Shifting transfer culture takes time, and work, and more time."
In 2019, during my first time working at UC, I proposed the concept of a transfer symposium that would bring together internal college representatives and external campus partners for collaborative conversations to support, improve, and innovate transfer student success. Today, a mere 6 years later, we hosted the inaugural Bearcats Transfer Symposium ?? I am thankful to our external partners who came from far and wide; for our internal academic college and department representatives who carved time out of their schedules; for the leadership that saw my vision and supported the implementation; for my "transfer famous" colleagues who donated their time to being virtually present with mini encouragement videos; but mostly I'm thankful for the Transfer Center team l get to be a part of who made today magic. Shifting transfer culture takes time, and work, and more time. Excited to continue this event in years to come!

Here's the agenda from Georgia Institute of Technology's inaugural Transfer Success Summit. Have you held a similar event at your institution?
A great day at Georgia Institute of Technology collaborating with colleagues around transfer student enrollment strategy and success. Tech is proud to enroll 1400+ transfers annually (1/4 of our new undergrads) via a variety of pathways and partnerships. https://lnkd.in/ezPWHtjz Special thanks to Janet L. Marling, Executive Director of National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students for serving as our keynote!

We loved being a part of Georgia Tech's Transfer Success Summit last week and seeing all the great work they are doing!
A little over a year ago, I had the idea that it would be great to convene students, faculty, staff, and administrators to talk about how we currently support, and might improve and expand that support, for transfer students at Tech. Today that idea came to fruition at our first Transfer Success Summit. Folks came together to share data, class work, mentoring, advising, and other strategies, and some of our transfer students shared their observations, challenges, and favorite things about Tech. We also benefited from our keynote speaker, Janet L. Marling , sharing wisdom, context, and encouragement towards building a wider and stronger transfer ecosystem. It was a great day of learning and insightful discussions in our campus community. Big thanks to my team for making the event both seamless and successful: Brian Garsh, M.Ed. , for your thought partnership and organizational leadership, and J Williams , Erik Johnson, and Elena Rivera-Himmelstein, M.S.Ed for impeccable logistical support and community-building with our student assistants. Let's keep the transfer momentum going! #transfersuccess #gtoue #NISTS National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students Transfer Nation

Please encourage STEM transfer-intending community college students to participate in this research study. Interviews will be conducted virtually, so students across the US can participate. The study is led by David Reeping - a past NISTS research grant recipient and the results will help universities improve their websites for STEM transfer students. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- How can university websites be better designed for STEM transfer students to have a smooth transfer? If you are a community college student aiming to earn a Bachelor's degree in a STEM field,?you may be able to participate in an online study!? ? We are looking for current community college students to participate in a 1-hour interview that involves evaluating university websites. The purpose of this research is to understand pain points in how university websites are designed and come up with next steps to improve their design for transfer students.? ? If you are interested in participating, please complete the screening survey here (~15 min to complete):? ? https://lnkd.in/eSQEwdeC ? ? You will be paid $50 in the form of an Amazon gift card for completing the interview. There is no incentive associated with completing the screening survey. ? ? If you have any questions, please let us know. The contact for this study is Dr. David Reeping ([email protected]) Transfer Nation
