Congratulations to Long Phan and Marc Levitan, winners of this year’s Service to America medal by Partnership for Public Service for their work studying tornadoes and developing new standards to withstand them. Every year, more than 1,000 tornadoes touch down in the US. When Marc and Long first started working at NIST, the word “tornado” did not appear in the model building code. Their decades of effort and leadership have led to a new code provision that will ensure critical infrastructure can withstand the windstorms they’re likely to face, saving buildings and lives. NIST and JILA researchers have achieved a significant milestone in the development of nuclear clocks, marking a new era in precision timekeeping. The international team has successfully demonstrated core technologies for a nuclear clock using thorium-229. This includes precise frequency measurements of nuclear transitions and establishing a direct frequency link between a nuclear transition and an atomic clock. Scientists have made small red and blue lasers for years but producing these lasers tiny enough to fit on a chip – which are important for quantum sensing, communications and information processing – has posed a challenge. NIST researchers have now filled in this “green gap,” producing a chip-scale green and yellow lasers by modifying optical components known as microresonators.
