You don’t have to be a coder or have a technical background to work in cybersecurity. Cybersecurity professionals work in analysis, project management, law, auditing or other fields. ? NIST has a diverse cadre of cybersecurity professionals, working to protect networks and help to develop standards that keep us—and our data—safer. ? In our latest Taking Measure blog post, three of these professionals tell their career stories: https://lnkd.in/e3KT-kiw #CybersecurityCareersWeek #CybersecurityAwarenessMonth #Cybersecurity

关于我们
We are the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a non-regulatory federal agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce. For more than a century, NIST has helped to keep U.S. technology at the leading edge. Our measurements support the smallest of technologies to the largest and most complex of human-made creations. NIST's mission is to promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life. NIST has awarded $15 million for a center of excellence to support U.S. engagement in international standardization for critical and emerging technologies. The global standards organization ASTM International will lead the new Standardization Center of Excellence, with multiple partners from across the standards development ecosystem. NIST supports the development of standards by identifying areas where they are needed, bringing together stakeholders and providing technical guidance and expertise to help stakeholders reach a consensus. The center’s efforts will align with the U.S. Government National Standards Strategy for Critical and Emerging Technology. The center will also complement the broader goals of the U.S. Standards Strategy published by the American National Standards Institute, with the goal of ensuring that the U.S. remains a global leader in standardization efforts. NIST will provide funding for the center through a cooperative agreement over a five-year period and will actively engage with the center and its stakeholders, providing technical expertise and leadership. Future awards will be subject to the availability of funds. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eEQYarbi #Standards #Technology #ScienceAndTechnology

Congratulations to the five organizations that will receive the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the nation’s only presidential award for performance excellence. The 2024 honorees are: Alamo Colleges District, which provides affordable or tuition-free education to eligible students. The organization, which includes five community colleges in the San Antonio, Texas area, now becomes the first higher education institution to win twice. Chickasaw Nation Department of Health, which provides health services across a 13-county service area in southern Oklahoma. It received a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The City of Henderson, Nevada, which ranks in the top 10% nationally for police and fire services, emergency preparedness, parks and overall city services. Freese and Nichols Inc. of Texas has projects that range from wastewater treatment plants to state highways. It now becomes the first two-time engineering firm winner. Northeast Delta Dental provides prepaid dental insurance coverage and benefits to employers and individuals. Founded in 1961, it comprises the Delta Dental Plans of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. NIST scientists have developed an updated laser technology that can visualize methane plumes and other gases in real-time. This video shows a methane cloud swirling and changing. The dark areas indicate little to no methane, while the brighter colors show higher areas of methane. Because it can take pictures very quickly, this technology can show how the methane cloud creates swirling patterns and changes in real-time, which wasn’t possible previously. This “free-form dual-comb spectroscopy” method can be easily adjusted to look for different gases, not just methane. ? This advancement could lead to more versatile and efficient sensors in everything from air quality monitors to food safety detectors to studying how materials burn or assessing muscle health non-invasively. When we think about the climate crisis, we tend to think big — it’s a global problem that requires global solutions. But NIST scientists James Warren and Craig Brown also want us to think small, very small. ? They’re thinking at the nano-level, which is anywhere between 1 and 100 nanometers. That’s about 1,000 times smaller than the width of a human hair. ? In a recent paper, co-authored with researchers from government, industry and private foundations, they call for a greater focus on nanotechnology’s potential role in combating climate change. ?
