Helping developers find the most profitable interconnection points on the electrical grid.

关于我们

Nira is a map tool, built for renewable energy developers, that shows available capacity at every interconnection point on the electrical grid. Customers like AES and Cypress Creek use Nira to find the most profitable points on the grid to site new projects.

We are excited to welcome another Transmission Expert to our team. ?????????? ????????????????, ???????????????????????? ???????????????? ???????????????? Jared will leverage his power system expertise to help Nira expand and improve our injection capacity software. Jared brings over four years of experience working closely with renewable energy developers and supporting the interconnection process. Jared has worked at a variety of power system consulting firms over the years. At Blended Power, he identified and evaluated new greenfield siting opportunities. At EPE, he ran injection studies to evaluate available capacity on the electric grid, and he performed shadow system impact studies and limited operation studies to estimate ISO study results and give developers insights to help mitigate their cost risks. He also has significant experience developing study tooling and automated study pipelines that he will continue to leverage at Nira. Now that Jared has joined, Nira now is home to 12 transmission experts. Our team develops tools to help project developers identify grid capacity and de-risk interconnection.

Transmission Planning Engineer at Nira Energy

There's never a boring day when you're working in generator interconnection. PJM recently released a proposal called Reliability Resource Initiative (RRI) that would allow *new* generators to enter the Transition Cycle 2 cluster to meet PJM's resource adequacy needs. The initial straw proposal called for generators with high Effective Load Carrying Capability (ELCC) to apply - which would then be ranked on different criteria to allow the top generators to enter TC2. In a recent update, PJM clarified some of the gating requirements and updated the ranking criteria. Pending stakeholder feedback and FERC approval, PJM's update to RRI include the following: 1. PJM is no longer enforcing a resource based cap - any and all fuel types can apply (previously only ELCC > 45% could apply) 2. PJM is reducing the cap on number to the top 75 projects (previously it was 100 projects) 3. TC2 project application resubmission deadline remains to be Dec 17th. Once PJM is nearing the end of TC2 application review, the application window for RRI projects will open (Early Q1 2025). 4. These RRI projects will then be ranked (see image) on a weight-based system (based on factors like delivery year, viability, contribution to resource adequacy to name a few) and the top 75 projects will be chosen to become part of TC2 and will be studied alongside TC2. 5. If PJM is unable to obtain FERC approval prior to start of TC2 Phase 1, then status quo rules will prevail, that is, no RRI projects and TC2 will continue as was originally intended.

We would like to introduce you to another one of our Transmission Experts. This time, we are introducing our very first?employee?from 2022. Fernando O., Power Systems Engineer As a transmission planner, Fernando plays a critical role in advancing our projects by driving research and the development of our automated data pipelines?for generation interconnection studies. His previous experience spans?years of?work in SPP, MISO, and ERCOT, where he?led?steady-state, stability, and short-circuit studies?for various stakeholders while working at?Electric Power Engineers. At Nira, Fernando has played a key role in expanding our presence in regions such as SPP, ERCOT, WECC, and ISO-NE. He has also made significant contributions enhancing Nira's transmission analysis functionality, helping shape the robust infrastructure we have today. Bringing Fernando onboard kickstarted our growth toward the impressive team we have today.

Follow Nira over the next few months as we introduce you to some of our Transmission Experts. In this first post, we introduce the newest member of our team. Amir Motamedi, Vice President of Interconnection, will work with our clients to streamline how they incorporate transmission capacity studies into their development process. Amir brings over 18 years of experience across transmission planning, electric grid operations, and interconnection planning. Prior to joining Nira, Amir was the Director of Interconnections with the Alberta ISO (AESO). A few highlights of Amir's career include leading the streamlining of the generation and storage interconnection process in the AESO with cluster studies and enhanced application requirements, executing the first cluster study process in Alberta, and leading the development and implementation of major transmission projects in Alberta. We are excited to welcome Amir as the 11th transmission expert to join our growing team.

Thanks to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for hosting a robust discussion on the benefits automation can provide to the generation interconnection process. As Andrew Martin?described, “automation should facilitate all steps of the study process. It will by no means replace engineers or be fully automated, but we have room to over 10x the speed and volume of engineering workflows while improving consistency and accuracy.” We look forward to continuing and expanding our collaboration with developers, ISOs, and utilities across the country to accelerate and de-risk the generation interconnection process with our software platforms.

FERC's #Interconnectionweek is off to a strong start thanks to opening remarks by Chair Willie Phillips. "Order 2023 is not a silver bullet, and there's much more to be done." At Nira, we agree with that, and certainly agree with the sentiments shared on the first panel: “the?tools we are using are out-dated; if we don’t look at new ways to build models and process studies faster, we won’t solve the problem.” We look forward to sharing our perspective on these issues?tomorrow.?Andrew Martin will be speaking on the second Efficiencies panel. Great article from pv magazine USA covering the Interconnection panel at the recent #Infocastsummit! Nira's?Andrew Martin?advocated for #reproducible study processes. Reproducibility builds on the requirements of FERC 845 and ensures that transmission planners across utilities, ISOs, and other industry stakeholders can align and better leverage software to automate repetitive tasks. Software that automates transmission planning studies is exactly what Nira's been working on for the last 3 years - and we've proudly supported > 300 GW of #generationinterconnection requests across the US. "Transmission providers and utilities should have a goal of communicating an interconnection study process that is reproducible. Once there’s a reproducible process...then the market can continue to build upon that reproducibility by developing software....we should strive to get to a place where transmission planning engineers are not needing to do repetitive tasks.”
