Transgender and nonbinary people experience homelessness at higher rates than their cisgender peers, and disproportionately experience unsheltered homelessness and associated adverse health outcomes. Medical respite programs play a uniquely important role in addressing this multi-faceted injustice, but they often face barriers in their pursuit of gender-affirming services for both guests and staff, including pre-existing physical infrastructure, limited workforce development, outdated policies and procedures, and thin community partnerships.
