"According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses are defined as firms with fewer than 500 employees. They represent?99.9%?of all U.S. businesses and employ about?46%?of the private sector workforce. Small businesses contribute between?43.5% and 50.7%?of the U.S. GDP, which includes a significant portion from the manufacturing sector. " (GoSpark AI numbers) These data points highlight the importance of small and medium business in the U.S. But because they don't have the resources to employ lobbyists or public affairs directors, so they are often overlooked at the policy level, be it regional, state, or federal levels. And more and more, they are accountable for meeting burgeoning regulations and taxes which make it difficult to survive, even though they do not have the financial and material resources of big corporations. We are effectively de-incentivizing entrepreneurship with many of the policy decisions over the last several years. Regardless of where you sit on the political spectrum, we need everyone to get behind a healthier ecosystem for these types of businesses that are foundational to our economy and our communities. Please get out and vote, and support candidates who "get it", regardless of party affiliation.

Congrats to U of Idaho and my friend John C. Shovic as they add more assets to their robotics program. John and his team have been great partners with our members- I like to think that it shows the potential "win" for both sides when industry and academia work together.

Kudos to my friends, Dr. Wade M. Larson, Doug Edmonson , and all our other collaborators for this amazing milestone. NIMA is proud to have played a small part in making this happen.
We are excited to announce the launch of East Valley High School’s KNIGHT MANUFACTURING. Yesterday was our official launch. This partnership between Wagstaff, Inc., East Valley School District, and students launches a student-run business that manufactures and sells products, takes orders, and trains for trade careers. Inspired by models from other states and modified with lessons from 5 years of the Production and Manufacturing Institute, the venture is now underway. The first cohort will work like a start-up funded by an investor and lay the foundation for future groups. As they build it, they will learn the business as they design, manufacture, and sell products to real customers. East Valley’s CTE Director, Doug Edmonson, and Wagstaff’s Director of Workforce Development, Dr. Wade M. Larson, travelled to locations nationwide to identify best practices. Working with EVHS’s CTE Instructor Justin Sinn, they invited experienced students to join Knight Manufacturing as their first period of the school day. At present, 16 students have enrolled. Superintendent Brian Talbott consistently expressed his commitment to making East Valley the best trades program in the region. He has been instrumental in expanding the Manufacturing Institute partnership, supporting the $200,000 shop overhaul, and nearly doubling enrollment in trades-related programs over the past year. This support makes the difference in creating a strategic partnership between education and business. Over the next few weeks, students will learn business operations, gain new skills, and identify products to design and manufacture. They will also design sales systems and point-of-sale processes to begin taking in work orders. As they learn by doing, Knight Manufacturing will continue to grow and increase capabilities for the coming semester (and future years). Wagstaff and East Valley School District wants to thank its partners who helped make this possible. Institute sponsors such as MacKay Manufacturing, Pearson Packaging Systems, Collins Aerospace, Career Connect Washington, and the Spokane Workforce Council have laid the foundation to bring in this program. Other key sponsors such as Kaiser Aluminum, BECU, The Machinists Institute, the Krumble Foundation, Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce, and Parker Hannifin have supported key programs. Other players such as HOTSTART, Sonderen Packaging, NIMA, and KXLY TV helped support the costs of making these programs possible. Supporters from Advanced Thermoplastic Composites, Inc, Idaho Central Credit Union, ALTEK, Merkle Standard, ControlFreek Inc., and PACIFIC NORTHWEST CHAPTER ASSOCIATED BUILDERS CONTRACTORS are instrumental. And education partners Community Colleges of Spokane, North Idaho College, and NEWESD 101 (NorthEast Washington Educational Service District 101) are major supporters of career pathways. This is a great clip about the difference between a great idea, a great prototype, and transforming those iterations into a product that can be made at scale with a competitive price point. I've been involved in product development efforts where team members fall in love with the coolest technology, but the transformation into a commercial product falls short. Even smart companies like Apple have fallen into this trap, as Steve Jobs elucidates here.....Nick Wilkes Deloit R. Wolfe Jr. Jeff Gaus Sheri Johnson

Record attendance for our conference this year, and that is due in large part to exceptional presentations from people like Alyssa Carson and Stan Shull. The Northwest is probably best known for the commercial aircraft industry, but we are also seeing incredible growth in the area of commercial space and satellite manufacturing. The overlap of AI, robotics, additive manufacturing and other enabling technologies is showing up in just about every business sectors right now. Record attendance this year at our annual I90 aerospace+ corridor conference. And tons of activity in the Expo with new exhibitors like Cpk Metrology. Everything points to an accelerating growth of aerospace and advanced manufacturing in Eastern Washington, Idaho and Montana.
We attended the #I90AerospaceCorridorConference in Coeur d'Alene Idaho and made a lot of great contacts with regional manufacturers.
