The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS), part of the National Institutes of Health, conducts and supports research on the science and operation of translation to allow more treatments to get to more patients more quickly. The center focuses on what is common across diseases and the translational process by studying translation on a system-wide level as a scientific and operational problem. Working in partnership with the public and private sectors, NCATS strives to develop innovations to reduce, remove or bypass costly and time-consuming bottlenecks in the translational research pipeline; demonstrate their usefulness; and disseminate the resulting data to the broader scientific community. A recent study by #SOTmembers and colleagues that used rodent and human cells found that females to certain endocrine-disrupting chemicals in personal care products may begin puberty earlier than usual by triggering certain brain receptors. Key Findings: ? Notable substances of concern include musk ambrette, a fragrance found in some detergents, perfumes, and personal care products, and a group of medications known as cholinergic agonists. ? These chemicals tend to block or interfere with hormone function in the body’s endocrine system. ? Researchers screened 10,000 environmental compounds and examined their effects on rodent and human brain cell lines that regulate reproductive functions, finding that some compounds may trigger receptors crucial to the puberty process. #SOTMember co-authors of this study: ? #SOTFullMember Shu Yang of National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) ? #SOTFullMember Ruili Huang of National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) ? #SOTFullMember Srilatha Sakamuru of National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) ? #SOTFullMember Menghang Xia of National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) Learn more: https://lnkd.in/ed8k8cQ5
