Since 1953, the NIH Clinical Center, the world's largest hospital dedicated to clinical research, has pioneered research aimed at improving human health. Located on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Md., we serve as a hub where volunteer patients and NIH scientists collaborate to advance medical innovations. More than half a million patients from all 50 states and around the globe have participated in our clinical research programs. Patients at the Clinical Center participate in research studies at no cost. We currently have around 1,500 studies underway, focusing on cancer, infectious diseases, heart and lung conditions, blood disorders, among others. Our bench-to-bedside approach brings research labs and patient care units together, fostering collaboration and rapid translation of scientific discoveries into treatments that save lives. We also provide world-class clinical research training for healthcare professionals and attract top scientists from around the globe. With 200 inpatient beds, 11 operating rooms, 93 day-hospital stations, and a wide range of diagnostic services, we are equipped for comprehensive patient care and cutting-edge research. Our scientific breakthroughs include chemotherapy for solid tumors, nitroglycerin for heart attacks, identifying a genetic component in schizophrenia, the first successful mitral valve replacement in a human heart, and blood tests for AIDS and hepatitis - many of which are now global standards in medical care.

We join HHS Careers in celebrating Dr. Thomas Burklow, MD, FAAP, FACC!
In recognition of National Veterans and Military Families Month, our #HHSVeteransSpotlight is celebrating #veterans like Dr. Thomas Burklow, MD, FAAP, FACC, who is a retired Colonel, recipient of the Bronze Star Medal, and medical doctor at The National Institutes of Health (NIH). As the Director for Education and Training at the NIH Clinical Center (CC), Dr. Burklow oversees a portfolio of training and education programs. He joined CC in 2017 after a 30-year career in Army medicine, including 10 years as the Chief of Pediatrics at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. “I greatly valued my military career, but I equally value my career that I now have here at the NIH,” Dr. Burklow said. “When I think back on my time with the Army, one of the things I remember most fondly were the people. So, when retiring from the Army, I was seeking another environment where I could develop camaraderie and partnerships, both professional and personal – those were important to me. “And with the Army, I always enjoyed being part of something that’s bigger than myself, and I think the same thing applies being here at the NIH.?To be part of institutions that look out for the well-being of the American public means a lot to me.” #NationalVeteransandMilitaryFamiliesMonth #PartofSomethingBigger

For many, the cost of healthcare in the US can feel like a barrier to accessing the proper medical care that they need. Lee Mason, a graduate student at The National Institutes of Health is hoping to help change that with an #AI program that can help people learn about the prices of medical treatments. Learn how his ‘MedicaidGPT’ tool is helping to increase transparency around healthcare costs: https://go.nih.gov/uLRld2v #NIH_IRP
