??? Nieman Reports recently put out a call to journalists asking if they still use a reporter’s notebook, and if so, what moments has it captured? The responses paint a picture of a tool that was a witness to history, a trusty repository of vital observations and, in at least one case, an archive of a romantic relationship. Stories by Amy Jamieson, Michael Fitzgerald, Sheikh Sabiha Alam, Arlene Schulman, Sarah Smith, Marcelo Soares, Benjamin Pu, and more. ??: https://lnkd.in/ehMr3MZh

To promote and elevate the standards of journalism
关于我们
The Nieman Foundation houses a dynamic set of initiatives to promote and elevate the standards of journalism and educate and support those poised to make important contributions to its future. We do this through our fellowship programs; our publications, online and in-print; and programming that convenes some of the leading thinkers of our time. Nieman began as a fellowship for select journalists to spend an academic year at Harvard in pursuit of individual study plans to strengthen their knowledge and leadership skills. That program recently celebrated its 75th anniversary; more than 1,400 journalists from nearly 100 countries have been awarded Nieman fellowships since 1938. Recently we added a short-term visiting fellowship for individuals with a specific project to enhance journalism who would like to spend up to 12 weeks at Harvard advancing their idea. Visiting fellows have included digital innovators, technologists, academics, and journalists from the U.S. and abroad. For both groups of fellows, Harvard and Nieman offer the rare gift of time to think, learn, plan and create in a rigorous academic environment. Following their work on campus, our fellows have gone on to assume senior leadership positions in newsrooms, produce groundbreaking journalism in every medium, launch entrepreneurial projects, and win the industry’s top honors. Nieman is the only fellowship program that also houses an array of publishing and convening initiatives focused on journalism. These include: ? Nieman Lab, an online reporting enterprise focused on the future of news and innovation; ? Nieman Reports, a website and print quarterly that explores contemporary journalism’s most important challenges and provides a forum for the industry’s leading voices on issues of ethics, values, innovation and more; ? Nieman Storyboard, a website that showcases exceptional narrative journalism and the art and craft of reported storytelling.

?? Nieman Reports' Winter 2025 magazine issue has arrived: "The assertion that we live in a “post-truth” world is gaining currency in these turbulent, polarized times. But journalists must not surrender to that idea, nor sacrifice their core discipline of rigorously testing and verifying facts, wherever those facts might lead. In Nieman Reports’ Winter 2025 issue, Angie Drobnic Holan lays out why fact-checking remains at the heart of journalism — and what’s at stake for all of us: 'It holds the line on reality for history’s sake.'" ?? A peek behind the curtain: One of the responsibilities and privileges of being at Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard this year as a fellow is that I'm asked to give a "Sounding," a full-length presentation that answers the question: Why do you do what you do? My answer: I do it for the money, power and fame! If you didn't laugh, I'm sorry this joke on LinkedIn didn't land. The real answer is that I do what I do because I love that feeling of being "at the edge" of journalism and technology which is what I write about this presentation-turned-essay for the Nieman Reports magazine. It's a small window into the world where my career success is predicated on the idea of working myself out of a job. Full story in the comments with a set of archival Axios photos I took picturing Priyanka, David, Paulina, Lydia, and Jaden. Thanks for reading!

“I quit being a journalist.” Mech Dara was an award-winning investigative reporter in Cambodia, known for exposing international scam operations and local corruption. But his 2024 arrest sends a chilling message about the growing dangers of reporting under an increasingly repressive regime. ?? by Bopha Phorn for Nieman Reports https://lnkd.in/emKX3tMq

"I’m constantly chasing what’s next in technology, media, and in my own career. The only problem is: No one knows where the edge is, not even me." ?? For Nieman Reports' Sounding column, Ryan Y. Kellett reflects on a career focused on media’s digital transformation. https://lnkd.in/e2GrQgzW

What happens when most news outlets in a state become nonprofit? With little outside notice, that has quietly but steadily been taking place in Maine, New England’s northernmost state. “We have an obligation as an industry to think creatively about solutions,” says Will Nelligan, chief growth officer at The National Trust for Local News. Nonprofits like the National Trust — which swooped in to buy the Portland Press Herald, three of Maine’s four other dailies, and 16 of its weeklies — may have saved the outlets from falling under the control of the for-profit corporations that were bidding for them. But the National Trust is facing scrutiny for failing to specify where the money came from to buy the papers, and for significantly increasing the salary of its own CEO. ?? Story by Jon Marcus ?? ?? PHOTO ESSAY: Photojournalist Natascha Tahabsem captures scenes of hope and heartbreak as displaced Syrians surge to the Jordan-Syria border after the fall of Bashar Assad's regime. "As a photojournalist, my role was twofold: first, to document the reality of the border, the displacement and homecoming of Syrians, and second, to do so with care, humility, and diligence." https://lnkd.in/epzmqV6Z
