Meet NIDCR Stadtman Investigator Dr. Blake Warner, who studies why immune cells go rogue & attack healthy salivary glands in Sj?gren’s disease—an autoimmune disorder marked by dry mouth. What he learns from patients may one day lead to better treatment. https://go.nih.gov/rL2j8wk Blake M. Warner, DDS, PhD, MPH, DABOMP
NIDCR and University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) researchers discovered that infection of salivary glands with SARS-CoV2, the virus that causes #COVID19, reduces an antifungal in saliva, possibly making people more vulnerable to mouth and throat yeast infections. The results, published in the Public Library of Science Pathogens, suggest that susceptibility is temporary in people with mild or moderate COVID-19. https://lnkd.in/dGqVCt2b Other researchers that participated in the study included: National Cancer Institute (NCI) NIH Clinical Center (CC) National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) participated in the study.
A faulty immune cell that fails to keep the immune system in check may underlie the autoimmune disorder Sj?gren’s disease, per New York University scientists. The NIDCR-supported research showed that blocking the immune cells’ excessive byproduct with barcitinib, an FDA-approved drug for rheumatoid arthritis, reduced Sj?gren’s symptoms in mice. https://lnkd.in/ekCh8WDn

What's in a face? Learn how NIDCR research could help prevent or treat birth defects
Humans are wired to focus on faces. The distinct features of each face help to define who we are. Research is working to unravel the mysteries behind how the head and face develop. Findings could help prevent or treat birth defects of the head and face. https://bit.ly/4fWTmVp #faces #science #research #NIH
Have you heard about NIDCR’s Data-Driven Science Hub, or DDS Hub? The website is a one-stop shop that offers information on: ? Datasets and repositories for human phenotype and multi-omic data, head and neck imaging data, and animal and microorganism data ? Analytic and computational resources, including cloud computing workspaces, code notebooks, and training and tutorials ? Guidance on data management and sharing policies and FAIR (findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability) data principles ? Data science and data-driven research funding opportunities from NIH and NIDCR ? Data science and data-driven research publications and events Take a tour of the DDS Hub here: ddshub.nih.gov/ The DDS Hub is community-driven, so we’d love to learn how it can best serve you.
