Seeing this post made me reflect that I have been catering for the Chicago Urban League and IMPACT Leadership since 2017! Thank you for being a wonderful client!
The Chicago Urban League’s IMPACT Leadership Development Program was so proud to once again partner with S. Dilla Thomas on a historical tour of North Lawndale and Bronzeville! Intentionally seeking to learn new ways of understanding the histories of two historical neighborhoods, we left with a far greater appreciation for their history and our role in the future of both communities. This tour was especially important for putting Professor Elizabeth Todd-Breland’s earlier lecture on the history of Blacks in Chicago from the founding of Chicago to the present into perspective! Beautifully weaving together the often overlooked intersections of Indigenous peoples, enslaved and free Blacks, restrictive covenants, and a history of Black protest and political organizing, we left with a renewed sense of possibility for our city and each other. As Dilla would say, it really is true that “everything dope about America comes from Chicago.” ?? Shoutout to Layla Bitoy-Dillon for fueling our tour with her delicious popcorn, Cleo's Southern Cuisine for a lunch that demonstrated my belief that you’re the best soul food in the city, and Nicole J. catering for their consistently fresh and delectable breakfast spread!
