Today, NICJR proudly released our newest report, Developing a Positive Youth Justice System, while presenting at the OJJDP 2024 National Conference on Youth Justice in Washington, DC. Taken together, the six principles laid out in this report provide a roadmap for a national effort to reduce the size of the juvenile justice system, improve the services it provides, and reinvest cost savings into neighborhoods and communities that experience a disproportionate burden of poverty and crime. Together, we can make our communities safer and greatly improve outcomes for our youth. Check out the report today: https://lnkd.in/gGcVySVQ

NICJR is thrilled to announce that we have distributed more than $800,000 to Oakland-based organizations this fall! These awards are part of the NICJR Giving Initiative (NGI) which provides funding and capacity-building support to grassroots organizations working on the frontlines of community violence intervention (CVI). To date, NICJR has provided more than $1.3 million to Oakland organizations and families. Investments in community violence intervention organizations are a critical component of Oakland's primary gun violence reduction strategy, Ceasefire. Through the Coalition to Advance Public Safety, NICJR and the California Partnership for Safe Communities (CPSC) provide training and technical assistance to the Ceasefire strategy, which has been credited with significantly reducing violence in recent months. A special thank you to our generous funders who have made these NGI awards possible: Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Philanthropies, Ballmer Group, and the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) through its Community Violence Intervention and Prevention Initiative (CVIPI). #NICJRGivingInitiative #CVI

Last week NICJR and Princeton University launched the Violence Reduction Research and Practice Network with a group of incredible experts from across the country. Deep, detailed and serious discussions on how to effectively address violence in the near and long term. Thank you to Patrick Sharkey and the Public Welfare Foundation for your partnership.

Jurisdictions nationwide have been called to reimagine public safety and invest in communities. Many responded by establishing offices of violence prevention and similar agencies dedicated to implementing violence reduction strategies that are community-centered, data-driven, and public health-informed. As the convener of these offices, the National OVP Network has grown its membership from 21 founding members in 2021 to more than 60 local, state, and federal OVPs in 2024. As a part of this tremendous growth, we are excited to share the first-ever NOVPN Strategic Plan! Through this plan’s successful implementation, the Network strives to grow the depth of member engagement, develop member expertise, and increase Network membership to the 100 local municipalities with the highest rates of gun violence in the country by December 31, 2027.? ? Read the plan today and join us in bringing these visions to life over the next three years!?https://lnkd.in/ge_VnsVs?

We are excited to announce the release of our Youth Data and Intervention Initiative (YDII) Report Volume II, which represents the next chapter in NICJR’s detailed, protracted research and data analysis project to learn what specific risk factors within a jurisdiction lead children to have a greater likelihood of being involved in gun violence when they grow up. The vast majority of serious crimes, especially shootings, are committed by a small group of young adults (ages 18–35) who have a combination of identifiable risk factors. When they were much younger—as young as 11 years old—most of these individuals already had a series of risk factors that distinguished them from other youth. With a clear understanding of these risk factors, school districts or other systems can connect high-risk youth and their families to intensive, community-based interventions before they become involved in violence. #InTheNews: NICJR is excited about a partnership with the City of Birmingham and their Office of Community Safety Initiatives to develop violence reduction strategies that focus on those at the highest risk of gun violence involvement. In a recent interview, NICJR Executive Director David Muhammad speaks about our data-driven approach to violence reduction, “We come in and work with the police department, with others who have incredible knowledge of what’s happening in the city and do a deep dive, both data analysis and qualitative data analysis to say what are the drivers of gun violence in the city of Birmingham.” Check out the full news clip and article here: https://lnkd.in/gAnG3SmZ
