Connor Lee's thesis uses genetic techniques and plunges into the waters of the Calcasieu and Sabine basins. This research is the first eDNA project for freshwater mussels conducted in southern Louisiana. Keep your eyes peeled for updates from the labs at Nicholls State University, Biological Sciences at Nicholls State University, Nicholls State University College of Sciences & Technology, Nicholls State University Graduate Studies, Nicholls Coastal Center #closesttothecoast #eDNA #metabarcoding

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic-resistant genes are commonly found in Louisiana’s local waterways, specifically in Bayou Lafourche and the Intracoastal Canal. Hurricane Ida flooded levees in Larose, Louisiana, where the bayou and canal intersect, depositing sediment contaminated with industrial chemicals, antibiotics, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Join Mr. Alec Plaisance and the Department of Biological Sciences at Nicholls State University for his M.S. thesis public defense. In the aftermath of natural disasters, the microbial world emerges with a story of resilience and adaptation. This study measured the efficiency of a bacterial consortium’s ability to degrade phenol obtained from sediment that polluted the yards of residential properties in southeastern Louisiana after Hurricane Ida in August 2021. Join Ms. Ivy Hebert and the Department of Biological Sciences at Nicholls State University for her M.S. thesis, public defense. In the ongoing battle against flood damage, Louisiana has undergone extensive hydrological modifications to mitigate the devastation caused by flooding. By examining the reproductive potential and body condition of Spotted Gar from both connected and disconnected floodplains, Emily aims to contribute valuable insights surrounding flood mitigation strategies and habitat conservation. Join the Department of Biological Sciences at Nicholls State University for Ms. @Emily Ott's M.S. Thesis, Public Defense. Join the Department of Biological Sciences at Nicholls State University for Ms. Tammy Johnson's M.S. Thesis, Public Defense. In certain contexts, such as in wastewater treatment or food safety, coliphage infection is of interest because it can indicate fecal contamination or the presence of pathogenic bacteria like E. coli. Additionally, researchers are exploring the potential use of coliphages as biocontrol agents to combat bacterial infections, particularly those caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Tammy's research illuminates the mechanisms of biofilm desorption upon coliphage infection and nutrient deprivation and sheds light on this intricate biological phenomenon.??Nicholls State University College of Sciences & Technology Nicholls State University Graduate Studies
