How and why is climate change contributing to violence? What are the global security implications? What can be done to address these intensifying conflicts? Join us on 9/25 at Duke University as journalist Peter Schwartzstein discusses themes and stories highlighted in his new book, 'The Heat and the Fury: On the Frontlines of Climate Violence' (Island Press, 2024). DETAILS: https://lnkd.in/entEGFyE As a journalist on the #ClimateSecurity beat, Schwartzstein has spent more than a decade documenting how climate stresses are bleeding into #violence large and small, including ISIS's exploitation of collapsing agricultural conditions to bolster its ranks in Iraq and the impact of rising seas levels on Bangladeshi piracy. By articulating the stories of the farmers, fighters, and regular families in the eye of this storm, Schwartzstein will clarify the stakes as violence proliferates, but also the hope and prospects for peace if temperatures are reined in. ABOUT THE ORGANIZERS AND SERIES: The Environmental Institutions Seminar Series is presented by the?Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability?and the?University Program in Environmental Policy, a doctoral degree program jointly offered by the Duke University Nicholas School of the Environment and Duke University Sanford School of Public Policy. This installment of the series is also presented in partnership with the?Triangle Institute for Security Studies?and with the Duke Human Rights Center?at the Franklin Humanities Institute at Duke University.

Ashley Ward, director of Duke University's Heat Policy Innovation Hub, took part in the recent White House Summit on #ExtremeHeat. Learn more about the summit: https://lnkd.in/enBwHvBX
Earlier this month, I was honored to join a few dozen other experts at the White House for the first #WhiteHouse Extreme Heat Summit, representing Duke University's Heat Policy Innovation Hub. The Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to a comprehensive response is a powerful step toward building resilience and safeguarding both lives and livelihoods. By coordinating actions across federal agencies, we are better poised to assist communities most at-risk. During the Summit, the White House announced its Extreme Heat Call to Action, a crucial initiative that mobilizes communities to enhance resilience against rising temperatures. By investing in innovative cooling strategies, improving infrastructure, and prioritizing susceptible populations, we can protect both public health and economic stability while building a sustainable, heat-resilient nation. It was so exciting to reconnect with some of the participants from the #HeatWise event, hosted in earlier this summer. Our shared commitment to addressing #extremeheat is stronger than ever, and I’m excited to continue collaborating on innovative solutions with this great group of people. “Climate change is accelerating, but resilience is lagging,” warned Indermit Gill, chief economist at The World Bank Group, during the Climate, Resilience, and Mobility: A Duke Climate Collaboration Symposium, hosted by the Duke Program on Climate, Resilience and Mobility. The event, which included a keynote from Dr. Gill and a panel discussion with Laurie Ashley (USAID Bureau for Resilience, Environment and Food Security), Nicole Franz (FAO), Christian P Lara (United Nations Resident Coordinator Office), Marie McAuliffe (IOM - UN Migration), and Marie-Soleil Turmel (Catholic Relief Services), called for a collective and multifaceted response to climate change that bridges disciplines, sectors and perspectives. I'm incredibly proud to have organized the Summit for Ocean Stewards, featuring the inspiring Dr. Sylvia Earle. As President of the Sustainable Ocean Alliance Duke University Hub, I had the honor of planning this half-day conference, bringing together the next generation of ocean leaders to inspire hope, share knowledge, and foster a supportive community of scientists and environmental activists. Held at Penn Pavilion on Duke University's campus, the summit included a student poster session, an alumni panel, and a final keynote talk by Dr. Earle. During the event, I presented a poster on my summer research with the Cetacea Galapagos Program. It was wonderful to share my work with the Duke community, and I truly enjoyed learning from my fellow student presenters. For the alumni panel, I worked to gather a group of individuals who could highlight the various ways Duke alumni are working to protect our oceans. We were excited to have representatives from policy, conservation, technological engineering, and fisheries, showcasing the diverse fields in which Duke graduates are making an impact. One of my greatest honors was introducing our keynote speaker, Dr. Sylvia Earle (Duke A.M.’56, Ph.D.’66), founder of Mission Blue / Sylvia Earle Alliance, world-renowned oceanographer, and my personal role model. It was such a privilege to get to know Dr. Earle during her time on Duke's campus. We received a grant from the Sustainable Ocean Alliance and generous funding support from 10 Duke University departments (including the Duke University Nicholas School of the Environment, Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability, and Duke Alumni Engagement and Development), which allowed us to bring together a diverse group of professionals, scientists, and advocates. A huge thank you to everyone who participated and to the Duke community for supporting our efforts. I am so grateful to attend a university that supports student-led events and to be a part of a community of passionate ocean conservationists!

While renewable energy use is at an all-time high globally, a modernized grid could enable more. Duke University Ph.D. student Tyler Norris told Marketplace by APM that the biggest challenge in the U.S. is coordinating states, cities, counties and utilities to invest, expand and update the grid at the same time. https://lnkd.in/eeYjkg-g ? Norris, James B. Duke Fellow at the Duke University Nicholas School of the Environment and former vice president of development at Cypress Creek Renewables, spoke last week at a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission workshop about how "flexible interconnection" could more quickly bringing solar energy to the grid while reducing costs. Read his pre-workshop comments, as well as a case study he led for Duke's GRACE Lab, directed by Dalia Pati?o-Echeverri: https://lnkd.in/et6m3HDe ?
