In Peru, a legislative amendment threatens the funds and resources available to Indigenous organizations fighting for the rights of Indigenous Peoples. "This amendment represents a direct threat to our access to justice. For years, Indigenous Peoples have faced violence, dispossession, and criminalization without the State guaranteeing real mechanisms for protection, reparation, and justice. Within this framework, international funding has been key?to enabling our organizations to litigate in defense of our territories and our rights, confronting the impunity of companies and governments that violate us," the Inter-ethnic Association for the Development of the Peruvian Rainforest (AIDESEP) said in a statement. They added, "With this law, the State seeks to block the funds that allow us to report abuses,?take our cases to national and international bodies, and protect our defenders persecuted for their collective struggle. It also restricts our legitimate right to protest and mobilize against government abuses. They would even prevent us from filing an administrative appeal." ?? Swipe to learn more ?? “The rights of Indigenous Peoples are not being respected, the contamination of our rivers and territories continues, there are threats to uncontacted Indigenous Peoples, more regulations that make environmental standards more flexible, and oil and gas lots continue to be promoted,” said Julio Cusurichi Palacios, a member of AIDESEP’s Board of Directors from the Madre de Dios region of the Amazon. Indigenous Peoples in the Peruvian Amazon took their case last week to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. They call for the Peruvian government to stop oil and gas concessions and respect their rights to free, prior and informed consent of activities in their territories –?which is the home of at least 20 uncontacted groups of Indigenous Peoples. The commission has asked the Peruvian government to provide written responses to the claims. https://lnkd.in/ezcb3UZK

The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) noted the importance of Indigenous leadership in its list of 2025 trends and innovations to watch in nature finance. "Organizations like Nia Tero and the Indigenous Peoples’ Major Group are advocating for greater direct access to funding by indigenous communities," the UNEP FI wrote. They added, "Their leadership goes beyond advocacy, with actions focused on embedding indigenous rights and knowledge systems into financial mechanisms. These initiatives set a strong example for others to follow, but still the number of transactions does not yet match the stated ambition of greater indigenous inclusion into such projects."
