We are welcoming another staff member to our team! Say hello to Manashree Padiyath, a USDA Forest Service Climate Resource Assistant working with NIACS and the Northern Forests Climate Hub for the next 8 months. Manashree will collaborate with the team to develop a diverse array of digital materials that effectively communicate the impacts of #climatechange on ecosystems and land management across the Midwestern and Northeastern United States. Manashree graduated from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities with a BA in Political Science, BS in Sociology, and BiS in Climate and Society, and has a strong background in social science with a deep commitment to #environmentaljustice. Welcome, Manashree!

NIACS and the USDA Northern Forests Climate Hub were invited to participate on a panel of climate service organizations during the “#ClimateAdaptation for Tribal Nations in Wisconsin” training in June. This 2-day training was a collaboration among the Midwest Climate Adaptation Science Center, The Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters, and several other partner organizations. It provided an opportunity for staff from the 12 tribal nations in Wisconsin to network, share resources, and communicate success stories. #climatechange #tribalsovereignty #landmanagement

Please welcome Grace Kirchner to the team! Grace is a USDA Northern Forest Climate Hub (NFCH) Fellow based at The Ohio State University. She will be working closely with OSU, NFCH, and NIACS teams to contribute to the modernization of #climatechange vulnerability assessments for Northeastern and Midwestern forest ecosystems through #geospatialanalysis and stakeholder engagement. Grace received her MS in Natural Resource Science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and her BS in Meteorology from Western Kentucky University. Outside of work, she enjoys being outdoors, traveling, and playing video games.

Check out this recorded presentation to learn about the Superior #NationalForest #AssistedMigration Plan from NIACS climate adaptation specialist and lead author of the plan, Katie Frerker. This is the first assisted migration pilot plan for a national forest; in 2020, Katie (working as an Ecologist for the USDA Forest Service on the Superior National Forest) formed a voluntary team with area Tribes and partners to develop the pilot plan, which focuses on assisted population migration and assisted range expansion. The plan addresses scientific research, genetic considerations, cultural considerations, seed sourcing logistics, monitoring needs, & practical silviculture application for consistent implementation across National Forest System lands. This presentation was part of the University of Minnesota Sustainable Forests Education Cooperative webinar series, “Making Sense of Forest #ClimateAdaptation Projects in Northeastern Minnesota.” https://lnkd.in/gM25Uys3

NIACS climate adaptation specialist Courtney Peterson recently traveled to Stockholm, Sweden to present on the Adaptive Silviculture for Climate Change (ASCC) Network at the 26th IUFRO World Congress. The theme of this year’s world congress was “#Forests & Society Towards 2050.” The first IUFRO congress took place in 1893, and congresses are held every five years in different parts of the world, providing a forum to discuss technical and societal issues of forest-related research, policy-making, and management.
