Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven's model for neighborhood revitalization is both holistic and unique. Our comprehensive approach of clustered affordable housing, homeownership education, community organizing, and commitment to green building and social justice empowers low- and middle-income people to become not only homeowners but vested stakeholders in their community. We have been serving the communities of New Haven for 38 years. NHS’ mission is to position neighborhoods to succeed by increasing and preserving homeownership; making homes beautiful, energy-efficient, and affordable; and helping residents take charge of their neighborhoods. Our affordable housing development is focused in Newhallville, the Hill, and Dwight/Edgewood neighborhoods of New Haven. Each year we rehabilitate up to 12 properties per year in our targeted neighborhoods, devote substantial community organizing efforts in these locations, and serve as many as 1700 clients from the Greater New Haven Area and the State of Connecticut looking to purchase a home or prevent a pending foreclosure.

Owning your own home is within reach! The HomeOwnership Center has helped many customers like Stella Damoah, who nearly gave up on her homeownership dreams, to finally secure a place she can call their own through the Homeownership Matters Program. First created by the Housing Committee at the Greater New Haven NAACP in 2018, the Homeownership Matters Program has successfully assisted 114 homebuyers before its original funding ran out. Thanks to the M & T CHARITABLE FOUNDATION (M&T Bank), which became the first lender to step up with a 2-year funding commitment, the program is now replenished and ready to continue its mission! This funding provides down payment and closing cost assistance to individuals from historically marginalized communities and low to moderate-income first-time homebuyers from underserved areas.
