A day in the life as an #AquaFort researcher. Watch as rainbow trout are successfully transferred from their hatchery in Ossipee, NH to the ocean, where they are now referred to as 'steelhead trout'. AquaFort serves as an offshore aquaculture training platform and research site, and the system is referred to as Integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA). IMTA is a self-contained aquaculture system that allows multiple species to grow at the same time within a single floating structure including blue mussels, kelp, and dulse. Learn about #Lumpfish biology and ecology, see where lumpfish live, and explore their distribution in a changing Gulf of Maine with this interactive lumpfish map: https://arcg.is/XG9r5 Dr. Shane Bradt, Co-Investigator on the Team LuMP research project, describes how to navigate this online resource, which is designed for fisheries professionals, researchers, and anyone who is interested in learning more about these very uniquely-shaped fish. The #GulfOfMaine is one of the fastest warming parts of the world’s ocean, and we’re already seeing shifts in the range of some marine species that live here. One unique species that is expected to shift as waters warm is the lumpfish – a small “cleaner fish” that is increasingly used in aquaculture overseas as a natural solution to parasites on fish like salmon. In the US, Lumpfish have never been harvested, so any shift in population is likely related to climate change. Lumpfish distribution in the Gulf of Maine have already changed, but we don’t understand exactly why. It's re-stocking season at #AquaFort ?? Here are a few moments of the AquaFort research team working to bring rainbow trout from their hatchery in Ossipee, NH, to the ocean. When rainbow trout reach 8 months of age or 10 inches in length, they can be transferred to the ocean to continue growing. Trout have a remarkable ability to acclimate to saltwater environments, and tolerate a wide temperature range. Once in saltwater, the rainbow trout are referred to as 'steelhead' trout. Learn more about the research being conducted on integrated multi-trophic aquaculture at AquaFort, and the goals of this project by visiting us at: https://lnkd.in/eFew_VKZ This work is funded by the Center for Sustainable Seafood Systems, and the project’s lead investigator is Michael Chambers, Ph.D.
