We had a fun time during a recent shake table tour for the UC San Diego Revelle Freshman Honors Seminar! As part of the seminar, themed "Understanding and Protecting the Planet" Co-PI Lelli Van Den Einde, professor UC San Diego Structural Engineering Department, led a lecture on the shake table’s role in studying natural disasters and engineering solutions. The interest was so high that we scheduled a tour to dive deeper into the topic. Huge thanks to Professor Skip Pomeroy and the 19 curious and engaged students for making it such a fantastic experience! We conduct tours to enhance awareness of the research being conducted at our world-famous facility and to build interest in #earthquake engineering. We support tours from local and regional professional chapters of diverse engineering societies such as ASCE, SEAOC, ACI, SHPE, NSBE, etc. We also provide tours for community partners that target K-12, undergraduate and graduate students, as well as visits from sponsors and industry partners. ??? Excited to Share My Latest Research! ??? I’m thrilled to announce the publication of my latest article, “Prediction of Dynamic Loads and Responses of a Tall Building in Tornado Wind: Numerical Analysis and Experimental Validation” in Engineering Structures (IF:5.6). ?? Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/g_rZcyqC In this study, we extended a time-domain method—originally designed for straight-line winds—to predict the dynamic loads and responses of a scaled tall building model under tornado wind. Using wind tunnel and ISU-Tornado Simulator (ISU-TS) data, our method incorporates aerodynamic load parameters, flutter derivatives, and buffeting indicial derivative functions for a tapered building model. Key Highlights: ? Developed and validated a numerical simulation method for tornado-induced dynamic responses. ? Achieved close alignment between experimental and numerical results, with peak acceleration errors within 7.5–16%. ? Demonstrated the critical role of accurately modelling wind field and structural parameters for better predictions. This work enhances our understanding of how non-stationary tornado winds impact structural loads and responses, offering a valuable tool for both researchers and engineers working in wind hazard mitigation. Yesterday the #Caltrans-sponsored project "Seismic Design Evaluation of Shallow Bridge Foundations at Potentially Liquefiable Sites" (PIs Jonathan Bray and Jason DeJong) executed their first experiment at the #NSFFunded Center for Geotechnical Modeling. The test features two pair of simple single degree of freedom structures on shallow foundations. The upper dense, unsaturated layer is underlain by very loose, liquefiable soil of varying thickness. The study will help engineers better understand seismic risks when liquefaction occurs at depth. High-speed cameras were used to monitor the structures' motions while dozens of buried sensors capture the soil response. Congratulations David Silva for building a great model. David started construction of this test in October.
