Today marks the 44th anniversary of the tragic MGM Grand Fire in Las Vegas. On November 21, 1980, this devastating fire claimed 85 lives and injured over 700 people, serving as a wake-up call for improvements in fire safety standards, building codes, and emergency preparedness. At NFPA, we remember this tragedy not only for the lives lost but also for the critical lessons learned that continue to shape fire and life safety today. Learn about the impact of this historic event and the advancements it inspired in our 2010 documentary: https://lnkd.in/giuAjpM2 #FireSafety #FireSprinklers #MGMGrandFire #CodesAndStandards

On Monday, New York City issued a drought warning for the first time in more than 20 years. Increasing drought conditions, strong winds and warm, sunny weather have created an ideal environment for fires to ignite and spread throughout the Northeast, where the number of brush fires has been far above the norm this fall: https://lnkd.in/gHAJRk2Z

The latest #FireTravels from Jacqueline Wilmot, P.E. of the NFPA Fire Protection Research Foundation takes us to St. Paul’s Cathedral, in London. Check out the full story below! #whereintheworldisjacqueline
Since the last #FireTravels blog was on the Great Fire of London, it’s only fitting the next stop on this historic tour of London is on the Second Great Fire of London. This fire was caused by air raids of the Blitz during WWII. The Blitz was a bombing campaign that took place over eight months, attacking industrial targets and other cities in the UK. St. Paul’s Cathedral was and continues to be a national icon, but was also known to be a fire risk due to the large amount of timber in its roof and dome. During the first world war St. Paul’s established their own personal fire brigade which consisted of volunteers known as the St. Paul’s Watch. This group was disbanded at the end of WWI but reinstated during the Blitz when Prime Minister Winston Church declared to save the cathedral at all costs. The Watch, also known as Guardians of the Night, consisted of 200 volunteers from cathedral clergy, staff, retired architects and residents. The Surveyor of the cathedral was put in charge as he knew the layout best. The group of diverse talent were also referred to as “the best club in London”. The volunteers took shifts to provide coverage day and night during the blitz with the goal to protect the church from harm and extinguish any fires. During this time, the bombs being dropped could not be extinguished with water as that would cause them to detonate. Therefore, the volunteers were trained to use sand within the span of 10 minutes, or the bomb could burn through the roof and fall into the cathedral below. These “heroes with grimy faces” as Winston Churchill famously named them, protected the St. Paul’s from sixty bombs and two direct hits. The cathedral is national symbol of survival and remains in London’s timeless skyline because of the efforts of the volunteers in the Watch. After the war, the Watch was disbanded in 1945, but the members continued their friendship and passion for St. Paul’s and used their talents during peacetime. This group would become known as the Friends of St. Paul’s Cathedral, officially formed in 1952. The Friends’ aim is to help foster interest in the Cathedral’s history and architecture, as well as provide financial aid and they still provide great support to the Cathedral today. In the photos below you will see (1) Members of the Watch, (2) Herbert Mason's famous view of the Cathedral seen through the smoke and flames of the Blitz in 1941, (3) the Memorial which contains the names of 1,027 firemen and 24 firewomen who died in the line of duty during the war.

NFPA has released an important report on single-exit stair apartment buildings, summarizing key discussions from a recent symposium addressing legislative efforts in the U.S. and Canada to raise allowable heights for these buildings from three or four stories to six. The report emphasizes that evaluating changes to the height of an apartment building served by a single exit stair belongs in a time-tested, balanced, consensus-based standards development process. When this process is substituted by uninformed legislative action, special interests, or misguided local policy decisions, there is a great risk to the protection and safety of people and property.
