Nurse Ellie Thompson saved the life of 14-year-old Jacob Burley. Read that sentence again please, because I want you to understand the magnitude of its significance?on many, many connected lives. Jacob was playing a pick-up basketball game at school when he suddenly collapsed, his heart stopped. Thankfully, school nurse Ellie Thompson was there and rushed in ready to act, performing CPR and using a portable defibrillator to revive his heart and bring him back. Akron Children's Dr. John Clark was quoted saying that his odds of survival were around 5% - FIVE PERCENT!!!! - if not for the fast response from Nurse Thompson. I have my eyes on the news every day, and just this week I read about Judie Kent. Thankfully for Martin Johnson, a father of five, Judie was in the right place at the right time to administer help after a serious accident occurred in Florida. According to the article, Johnson was riding his motorcycle to work when a vehicle attempted a sudden U-turn, striking Johnson and causing serious injuries, including a broken femur and multiple other fractures. Judie stopped her car and rushed to Johnson's aid on the street, stabilizing his leg and head and keeping him calm until paramedics arrived. Her quick and selfless actions are the very definition of a true nurse, a true hero — just ask Mr. Johnson and I think he'd agree. Cheers to you Judie Kent! The Carlyle Group co-founder made news this week after pledging a BILLION dollars to help stem the nursing shortage. According to the American Nurses Association, private giving to support nursing students accounts?for only 1 penny of every dollar given for healthcare, and Conway aims to change that. The nursing shortage is very, very real. It's projected that at least 400,000 new nurses are needed by 2027 to meet the national demand, and 500,000 new nurses by 2036. This is why at Nexus Bedside, we have developed a hybrid model— it doesn't replace nurses, it supports them, by bridging technology and compassion under a unified system.
