Today, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted 4–0 to advance a Notice of Inquiry (NOI) titled Promoting the Development of Positioning, Navigation, and Timing Technologies and Solutions. The FCC’s unanimous vote marks a pivotal step toward strengthening GPS resiliency. Backed by bipartisan and public support, the new Notice of Inquiry advances efforts to develop terrestrial PNT solutions that add critical redundancy to our nation’s infrastructure. A new national Public Policy Polling survey shows that Americans strongly support building a terrestrial complement and backup to GPS by a 10-to-1 margin. With widespread bipartisan agreement, the results show that voters recognize the urgent need to bolster our national security, public safety, and economic stability against GPS vulnerabilities. Why is resilient PNT so important for critical infrastructure? That was the focus of a discussion today at Mobile World Congress. NextNav COO Sanyogita Shamsunder joined Andrew Thiessen (Head of 5G/XG, MITRE), GIL BIRAN (GM, Oscilloquartz), and Yoshioki CHIKA (Board of Directors, MetCom) on FNTV to explore the need for a resilient complement or backup to GPS. The discussion underscored a stark reality: a major GPS outage could bring economic losses and disruptions. Beyond the dollars, the fallout would be felt industry wide. Telecommunications networks could grind to a halt without GPS timing (cell towers rely on GPS for synchronization), and emergency services would lose critical location capabilities, hindering 911 response and compromising public safety.
