Climate change impacts every aspect of community life, from housing and food security to economic stability. Addressing these challenges requires equitable solutions that empower local leaders with the tools, data, and partnerships they need to adapt and thrive. We’re committed to fostering a future where communities most impacted by climate risks have the resources to navigate and mitigate these challenges. Through initiatives like the Black Resilience Network, we explore pathways to climate resilience that center equity, innovation, and collaboration. Dr. Atyia Martin, on behalf of Next Leadership Development, joined a dynamic panel hosted by Brookings Metro to discuss how climate science and community partnerships are evolving to meet today’s urgent needs. As we observe #NationalNativeAmericanHeritageMonth, we honor the enduring wisdom of Tribal Nations who have been stewards of the land for generations and reflect on the disproportionate climate impacts they face—extreme weather, biodiversity loss, & threats to their traditional livelihoods. Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK)—a blend of observation, experience, and adaptation—offers powerful strategies for combating climate change and building resilience. From controlled burns that rejuvenate ecosystems to preserving heirloom seeds that enhance food security, TEK demonstrates how nature-based solutions protect both the environment and cultural heritage. This approach acknowledges the deep connections between people, the land, and future generations. Tribal Nations, such as the Santa Clara Pueblo Tribe, exemplify resilience through their recovery from events like the 2011 Las Conchas Fire. Their practices highlight how combining ancestral knowledge with modern strategies fosters sustainable solutions for climate adaptation and mitigation. To truly address climate justice, we must learn from and support Tribal Nations in preserving and applying TEK—not just as an environmental strategy, but as a way to strengthen communities. Wildfires remind us of the urgent need for disaster preparedness and resilience. Recent fires in Nevada (Callahan), California (Mountain), and Oklahoma (Euchee Creek) highlight how communities can be impacted and how we can prepare to stay safe. ?? Be Ready: Create an emergency plan for evacuation, practice it with your family and pets, and know where you'll go if you need to leave quickly. ?? Get Organized: Review your personal and insurance documents to ensure they’re current. ?? Strengthen Your Home: Use fire-resistant materials for renovations, and clear at least 30 feet of flammable debris from your home. Preparedness saves lives.
