“Nasutsa Mabwa is a vibrant, energetic force to be reckoned with as a business owner, civic leader and human being. Recently Nasutsa and three other inspiring women (including our very own Patty Barbato) were panelists for the Evanston Chamber of Commerce Women Who Changed It event. Nasutsa’s story is one of resilience, focus and creating her own path. She spent time in urban planning for the City of Chicago before becoming one of the first and only women of color leading a major real estate development project on the southeast side of Chicago. A huge responsibility, Nasutsa thrived in the environment given her ability to connect with the community and her extreme discipline and get it done right attitude. For all her achievements and involvement, Nasutsa was awarded the Women in Real Estate Bright Horizon Award in 2008 and was named one of Crain’s Chicago Business “40 Under 40 Class” of 2010. Yet, Nasutsa also was raising a family and realized she needed more control over her schedule and freedom to put her family first when she needed to. She made the hard decision to leave her corporate career and start her own business, ServiceMaster Restoration By Simons, where she has been President for almost 10 years. Nasutsa’s commitment to excellence and impact have not wavered. She now meets homeowners and business owners in crisis – those the victims of fire or other damage to their homes – walking them through recovery step by step with her team. At the panel, Nasutsa attributed her ability to stay centered amidst a wonderful yet stressful life at work and home to her willingness to lean on family and never be afraid to ask for support. She shared that she was orphaned at 13 and learned that nothing could be as hard or as bad as that, so she voices what she wants and creates that path towards it. Thank you, Nasutsa, for being an inspiration and model for all of us who are trying to do the same!,” Candance Chow, NextGroup CoFounder

NextGroup recently attended an insightful Talent Outlook panel hosted by the Executive Club of Chicago. Thank you to Hilda Harris Piell, Senior Managing Director and CHRO, CME Group, Katie Lawler, SVP and CHRO, ITW, and Aaron Sojourner, Senior Researcher & Labor Economist, Upjohn Institute for Employment Research for sharing your experience, insight and predictions regarding the greatest issues impacting the talent landscape this year. What did we learn? Tight labor markets are here to stay! While the market has been softer the past 9-12 months, we just do not have the supply of talent to fill gaps left by a shrinking number of Americans who are of working age. Where does that leave us? It leaves us in a space that must take full advantage of the talent we have - build it, grow it and don't disregard it because it doesn't ""look like it has in the past"". Over 40% of professional, college educated women leave the workforce when they have families. Yet, systemic barriers and bias still make it difficult for these women and men to re-engage fully in work. Employers - we must do better. And, NextGroup is here to help you. Together we can place better value on meeting the needs of our teams in order to meet the needs of our organizations long term. Email us at [email protected] to discuss how.

Thanks to the Evanston Chamber of Commerce for Hosting 'Women in Business' at the beautiful offices of UL Research Institutes in Evanston. Four smart women panelists discussing changes in career paths. A lot of great insight... Patty Barbato from NextGroup was among them. She is guiding me through my new venture of "projected based" work. What a great event... being with such amazing women.

Recently, we attended the Axelson Center for Nonprofit Management’s “More Than Money: Philanthropy, Fundraising & Justice” conference. During the plenary session, “Fundraising in the Pursuit of Justice: lessons from the Black Philanthropic Tradition,” Nneka Allen, Principal and Founder of The Empathy Agency and Dr. Tyrone McKinley Freeman, Glenn Family Chair in Philanthropy, Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, shared stories of the Black philanthropic tradition, where givers are also receivers (“What I have is what you have”) and where generosity is a way of BEING. They asked us to consider how we might become more relational, communal, abundant and loving in our work – remembering that fundraising is not a TRANSACTION, but rather a CULTIVATOR OF JUSTICE. They also reminded us that “relationships move at the speed of trust.” At NextGroup, we’re committed to empowering women and professionals of color to advance in the workplace, where justice in hiring is a priority. So as November begins, we’re lifting up the words of Cornel West: “Justice is what love looks like in public.” We’re asking ourselves, How are we showing up? How are we shifting mindsets? How are we building trust? How are we being proximate? And we’re amplifying actions that inspire us. Check out this Oct. 29 open letter to grantees from The Polk Bros. Foundation, centering racial equity and racial justice: “What More Can We Do To Create Real, Lasting Change in Chicago?” And, share your thoughts regarding how we can advance justice and racial equity in all aspects of philanthropy.
