“We can’t use agency it’s too expensive.” I’ve heard that more times than I can count. And I get it. Budgets matter. Leadership has tough calls to make. But here’s what I also know: While corporate teams are focused on cost, the people on the floor are focused on survival. The real cost of being short-staffed? ? Burnout ? Turnover ? Delays in care ? Staff silently struggling to make it through the shift Last week, I picked up a shift in the ER my first since moving from bedside to healthcare staffing. And it brought everything back: The pace. The pressure. The patients who need you now. The team doing more with less. It was amazing to see my people again the ones I’ve called my second family. It reminded me why I do this work and why I staff with intention. Because staffing isn’t just about filling roles. It’s about protecting the people who keep the system running.
