关于我们

I help ambitious mid-career professionals find their “next act” career: a job that pays better and provides purpose. My clients are ready to get a new job, change industries, or come back to work after a career pause. Some clients are currently employed and ready to make a big career leap. Others have been on the job hunt for months and they’re not getting interviews or offers. The average client lands a new role in ~4 months with a 20% pay bump. (Read client success stories here: https://emilyworden.com/client-success-stories.) If you’re ready for your “next act” career but you’re stuck in the job search, try my SMART method. This is the same five-step process I have used to help hundreds of people land their next role: SEEK: What do you want? Clarify your mission, vision, and non-negotiables. MATCH: Who are your target employers and what do they want? ALIGN: Now that you know what you and your target employers want, align your personal brand, resume, and LinkedIn profile. RELATIONSHIPS: Now that your personal brand, resume, and LinkedIn are tight, move on to referrals and recruiters. Here’s where most of my clients land jobs. THRIVE: Streamline the job search, nail the interview, and negotiate your salary and pay bumps. If you need support for your job search, I’ve got several coaching packages to help you: 1:1 coaching: I am your cheerleader and drill sergeant, providing guidance and accountability. I hold your hand and kick your ass at the same time. Packages start at $995: https://bit.ly/EmilyCoachingPackages Mini coaching (NEW): I give you the resources and you get to work. For those who prefer to work independently with little guidance. Packages start at $250: https://bit.ly/MiniCoachingPackages Not sure which is right for you? If you are #OpentoWork and posting about it on LinkedIn, there's a better way to do it. Too often I see the generic, "Hi everyone - I am looking for a new role and would appreciate your support. Here's the closest I've come to a magical LinkedIn Headline formula: IDEAL JOB TITLE | KEYWORD | KEYWORD | KEYWORD | I HELP __ ACHIEVE __ BY DOING __. Let's break it down: IDEAL JOB TITLE: Don't list your current job title, list the job title you're looking for next (tips about this in the article link in the comments). KEYWORDS: List the top 3-5 skills keywords you see repeatedly in the job descriptions that interest you. I HELP __ ACHIEVE __ BY DOING __: This is where you speak directly to your target employers’ needs. Study those job descriptions - what do your target employers want? How does your work help make that happen? I HELP __: Your target employers - what kind of companies or industries interest you?? ACHIEVE __: What do your target employers want to achieve? How do you help them achieve it?? BY DOING __: What do you do that helps you achieve your target employers’ needs? LINKEDIN HEADLINE EXAMPLES ... How to find people who are hiring right now: ? Go to LinkedIn's search bar and enter "I'm hiring" ? Add your industry for better results: ["I'm hiring" and healthcare] or ["I'm hiring" and "project manager"] ? Click on "People" to explore people who are hiring (you can also play with other filters like "Locations" and "Current company") ? Click on "Posts" to find recent posts about open roles (be sure you have the "Date Posted" filter set to "Past week") You can also search by the #hiring hashtag: ? Go to LinkedIn's search bar and enter #hiring + job title in quotes. For example, [#hiring "project manager"] or [#hiring "graphic designer"] ? If you are looking for remote roles, you can add that to the inquiry too: [#hiring "project manager" remote] ? Remember to keep the "Date Posted" filter set to "Past Week" #Jobseekers, I'm rooting for you! ?? #jobsearch #jobhunt #LinkedIn

Job search interview prep checklist: 1) Research the company - not just their website, but look for press releases, news articles, annual reports, and interviews with the CEO/leadership team. 2) Research the people interviewing you - study their LinkedIn profile and activity. Search for their name online. Read anything they have posted/published. Look for anything you have in common that you can bring up during the interview. 3) Study the job description - Pull out the keywords and responsibilities and come up with examples of how you have been successful in the past. 4) Practice telling your stories in SAR format (Situation, Action, Result) and use quantifiable measures whenever possible. Check out my Story Stash for advice about how to do this (link in comments). 5) Anticipate the questions you will be asked. Who is interviewing you? What team are they from? That will affect the kind of questions they ask. Someone in sales will approach the interview differently than someone in engineering, for example. 6) Research potential interview questions. Search online for "typical interview questions for engineering jobs." Or search by company: "typical interview questions for engineering jobs at Apple." Or search by industry: "typical interview questions for engineering jobs in the healthcare industry." 7) Look at Glassdoor, Indeed, and Comparably for the company name, then search for the company name and a tab called "Interviews." There you will find interview questions and insight about the interview process. 8) Prepare questions to ask the interviewer. They will ask, "Do you have any questions for me?" YES YOU DO. You can ask about the office culture and job expectations. Some of my favorite questions to ask involve being proactive: "What are the most important tasks I will need to accomplish in my first 90 days on the job?” “What aspects of this job would you like to see performed better?” “What are the key challenges or problems of this position?” 9) Practice how to answer, "What are your salary expectations?" HINT: You don't answer it. I wrote a post about how to address this question, link in comments. 10) Gather your interview materials - a notebook and pen to take notes (ALWAYS take notes!), several copies of your resume (and reference list if you have one), a printout of the job description, and your portfolio (if required). We could discuss interview prep all day, but those are my top 10 tips. How about you? What's your favorite way to prep for an interview? #Jobinterview #interview #jobseekers #jobhunt

My favorite job search hack is something you likely already use every day. I'm talking about Google, and when you combine Google with Google Alerts, you remove hours from your job search. With the right prompts, you can create the perfect job search query and get notified when new jobs are posted on any job search site. Let's say I was looking for Project Manager jobs in the Boston area. Here are some sample queries: “?????????????? ??????????????” ???????? ???????????? will show you just that … Project Manager jobs in Boston. NOTE: Put the job title in quotes, otherwise Google will pull up results that include “Project" and “Manager” but not necessarily “Project Manager.” “?????????????? ??????????????” ???????? ???????????? ???? ???????????????????? Use “OR” in your search query if you’re considering two (or more) locations for your next job. “?????????????? ??????????????” ???????? ???????? ???? If you want to include your general area and not just a city. “?????????????? ??????????????” ???????????? ???????? If you are only looking for remote or work-from-home jobs. “?????????????? ??????????????” ???????? ????????:??????????.?????? If you only want Project Manager jobs at Apple. Add any company’s domain name here to find jobs specifically at the organization. NOTE: DO NOT include a space between site: and the name of the company. Make it all one word. “?????????????? ??????????????” ???????? ????????:??????????.?????? ???? ????????:??????.?????? This is an example of using the “OR” and “site:” features in a search query. These results will bring you only Project Manager jobs at Apple or MIT. “?????????????? ??????????????” ???????? ???????????? ????????:.?????? This will bring you Project Manager jobs in Boston at any educational institution with a .edu domain. “?????????????? ??????????????” ???????? ???????????? ????????:.?????? This will bring you Project Manager jobs in Boston at any organization with a .gov domain. ?? ??????????: You will get even more accurate results if you enter the “Careers” or “Jobs” page for large companies. For example, if you want to work at Apple, you would get better results entering “site:jobs.apple.com” over “site:apple.com.” Here’s a great sample query for a Project Manager who wants to work at Apple: “?????????????? ??????????????” ????????:????????.??????????.??????. Now just set up some Google Alerts with those queries and you're done! I wrote a newsletter article that explains how to use Google + Google Alerts in your job search, link in the comments. #jobsearch #jobhunt #jobseekers #opentowork

I received this question from a job seeker the other day ... "I’ve been trying to improve my resume and LinkedIn profile and one piece of feedback I’ve received is that I need to include more figures when showing off my skills. I understand the reasons for this but I’m not sure I have any figure-backed experiences that show my skill set. What are your thoughts on including figures?" And here is my response: "YES, you need quantifiable measures on your resume and LinkedIn profile. It's the difference of 'show' vs. 'tell.' You can TELL me that you're a great employee, and that's fine, but it's more compelling if you can SHOW me you're a great employee by sharing your success metrics. I wrote a document that could help, check out the 'Story Stash.' You can access it here: https://lnkd.in/eTyJQRAv." If you're stumped about how to find quantifiable measures for your resume, check out my Story Stash, page 2. I've got loads of tips that will help. Once you find your quantifiable measures, include them in your resume AND your LinkedIn profile - both in the Experience and the About section. Include them in your cover letters too. #jobhunt #jobseekers #resume #LinkedIn

I just wrote three clients with this information so I figured I'd share it with you too ... If you're thinking of making a career change and exploring potential new careers, I'm quite impressed with Teal's career exploration tool: https://lnkd.in/erdUsk4P. They do a great job of outlining the job's role, responsibilities, day-in-the-life, and related career paths. But one of my favorite parts - they offer suggestions about how to update your LI profile AND how to prepare with potential interview questions. In the past, I have recommended CareerOneStop's career profiles: https://lnkd.in/eRF-smG2. I still like it and recommend it (especially for the salary info and industry outlook), but Teal's career exploration tool is a much-welcomed tool in a job seeker's toolbox! This is not a Teal-sponsored post, I just deeply appreciate this tool and I want you to know about it. #jobhunt #jobseekers #jobsearch #ilovetealsomuch

"While your resume and experience are impressive, they were not best aligned for our business needs at this time." It doesn't matter if you are overqualified, underqualified, or perfectly check every box on their list ... It doesn't matter if this was your "dream job" or just one of your hundreds of "Easy Apply" jobs ... This kind of message still hurts. It feels like a personal rejection, an assault on your skills or talents. You could NAIL this job! Why can't they see it? What is wrong with you? NOTHING. Nothing is wrong with you. The hiring process is entirely subjective and utterly out of your control. You could do everything right - and I'm sure you did, because today's job seekers are savvy and resilient - and still get a rejection notice, or simply ghosted. At this point, it's easy to point fingers at yourself - "What's wrong with me? Why can't I get a job?" Instead, point fingers at the hiring process. It's broken. There is nothing wrong with you. There is nothing you could have done differently to get the job offer. I know you want to overanalyze the things you said or did during the interview process, but the truth is, you were probably AMAZING during the interview. And you wowed them. But this is a competitive market, and someone else wowed them too. Or the job went to an internal candidate. Or they found someone cheaper. Or they're going to pull the role and repost it next week. The point is, you won't know the real reason. So stop beating yourself up over it. It's Saturday - please unplug this weekend and treat yourself kindly. The job market will still be here on Monday. The most important thing you can do for the next 48 hours is take care of your physical and mental health. I'm rooting for you ?? #jobseekers #jobhunt #jobsearch #mentalhealth

"So, Emily, what are your salary expectations?" Here's how to answer that question ... YOU DON'T. Never say your number first, it puts you in a weaker negotiating position and you're taking money off the table. ? Here's what you say instead: "I'm still learning about this role so I haven't set salary expectations yet. What do you have budgeted for this position?" If they won't share their number and press you to give your number first, say something like, "BASED ON MY RESEARCH, similar positions in this geography and industry pay between $x-y. Is this also the range you have budgeted for this position?" ? "BASED ON MY RESEARCH" is the key phrase here. It's not about you, it's about the cold, hard data. This takes your emotions (and imposter syndrome) off the table. So how do you do this research? I recommend searching at least three different sites to get a suitable range. Here are my favorites: indeed.com, salary.com, BLS.gov/ooh, CareerOneStop, Glassdoor, and Comparably. List the average salary as the bottom of your range, and add another 20% for the top of your range. #jobinterview #negotiations #jobseekers

Let's focus on REAL connections on this #socialsaturday ... In addition to making new connections on LinkedIn, focus on reinvigorating old ones. I'm talking about offering AND asking for help (that's what real networking is all about!) Choose five people in your network you haven't connected to in a while. Send them a message: "?????? ?????? ?? ?????? ???? ??????????????????/?????????????? ???? ???????? ???????" Then, if you're a #jobseeker, send five messages to people in your network outlining your ideal job. I wrote an article outlining how to do this in detail, here's a snippet (I'll link to the article in the comments...) "????
